HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that
3is neurobiological in origin and is characterized by
4difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and
5by poor spelling and decoding abilities; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Secondary consequences of dyslexia may include
7problems in reading comprehension and reduced reading
8experience that can impede growth of vocabulary and background
9knowledge; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Social emotional concerns and long-term
11consequences, including lower academic achievement and higher
12dropout rates, can arise from the negative impact of dyslexia
13and poor reading abilities if not properly addressed with
14appropriate intervention; therefore, be it
 
15    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
16HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
17we urge public and private schools and the Illinois State
18Board of Education to recognize that dyslexia has significant
19educational implications that can be addressed with
20appropriate intervention and supports; and be it further
 
21    RESOLVED, That public and private schools are urged to

1utilize the resources from the Illinois State Board of
2Education's Reading Improvement Advisory Group and the
3Illinois State Board of Education Dyslexia Handbook to assist
4them in addressing the needs of students with dyslexia with
5appropriate screening at an early age followed by appropriate
6interventions; and be it further
 
7    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
8delivered to the Illinois State Board of Education.
