HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives wish
3to congratulate Pete Nenni on his retirement as deputy
4managing editor of The Daily Herald after more than 40 years of
5dedicated work in the newspaper business; and
 
6    WHEREAS, A native of Erie, Pennsylvania, Pete Nenni was
7raised in Mount Prospect and attended Forest View High School
8in Arlington Heights and Harper Community College in Palatine;
9he graduated from Northern Illinois University with a
10journalism major and a political science minor; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Pete Nenni first worked with the Barrington Press
12weekly newspaper group in Barrington; he joined the Daily
13Herald as a reporter in 1980; he was the legal affairs reporter
14for one year and the transportation reporter for five years;
15he also covered local government and business; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Pete Nenni served as the Lake County
17editor/manager for more than ten years and as an assistant
18city editor in the Cook County office for six years; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Pete Nenni was named deputy managing editor in
20February of 2017 to oversee local coverage in the Cook, Lake,
21Fox, and DuPage zones, which included organizing coverage

1plans for the website and print editions and overseeing the
2local reporting and editing staffs; he was also tasked with
3many organizational and efficiency-based special projects; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Pete Nenni reported on events such as the Chicago
5Tylenol murders, the Laurie Dann shootings, the Arlington Park
6Racetrack fire, the Browns Fried Chicken massacre, and a
7presidential primary in New Hampshire where government
8corruption was exposed, among others; he has interviewed
9President Gerald Ford, former Governor James Thompson, and
10Boston Red Sox Hall of Famer Joe Cronin; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Pete Nenni was a member of the Daily Herald
12Editorial Board and served on the Northern Illinois Newspaper
13Association Board of Directors, including a term as president
14in 2009; and
 
15    WHEREAS, During his reporting career at the Daily Herald,
16Pete Nenni won 12 state and regional writing awards, including
17three Peter Lisagor Awards for Public Service reporting; those
18awards stemmed from investigative projects focusing on faulty
19equipment and poor maintenance of a suburban bus system and
20mishaps and near mishaps on the runways and taxiways at O'Hare
21International Airport; he was named the Daily Herald's Manager
22of the Year in 2000; and

1    WHEREAS, Counting Pete Nenni's work on newspapers in
2junior high school, high school, college, and professionally,
3his journalism career has spanned 46 years in the Northwest
4suburbs; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Pete Nenni is respected by his peers and those
6who worked for him; Daily Herald editor John Lampinen called
7him "a devoted journalist, a caring mentor and leader, and a
8tremendously good person"; therefore, be it
 
9    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
10HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
11we wish to congratulate Pete Nenni on his retirement as deputy
12managing editor of The Daily Herald; and be it further
 
13    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
14presented to Pete Nenni as a symbol of our esteem and respect.
