HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to congratulate the Murray Parents
4Association on the occasion of its 50th anniversary; and
 
5    WHEREAS, The Murray Parents Association was founded in
6October 1971; and
 
7    WHEREAS, As part of its mission, the Murray Parents
8Association members work to promote the general welfare of the
9residents of the Murray Center and foster the development of
10programs on their behalf; and
 
11    WHEREAS, The Murray Parents Association advises and aids
12parents in finding solutions to their problems as well as
13helps to coordinate their efforts and activities; and
 
14    WHEREAS, The Murray Parents Association encourages
15research and actively works to help the public gain a better
16understanding of the problems associated with developmental
17disabilities, as the association serves as a clearinghouse for
18gathering and disseminating information and cooperating with
19the public, with private and religious agencies, and with
20professional groups; and

1    WHEREAS, There are 252 residents at the Murray Center, and
2over half of these residents have called Murray home for at
3least 20 years; and
 
4    WHEREAS, These individuals have many complex needs that
5are well met by the Murray Center staff; more than half have a
6dual diagnosis of a developmental disability and a mental
7illness; serious behavioral issues are well managed at the
8Murray Center; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Nearly half, approximately 45%, of the Murray
10Center residents are non-ambulatory; many cannot express
11themselves verbally and understand very little of the world
12around them; medical issues are prevalent and complicate even
13further the labor intensive needs of these individuals; some
14residents are completely dependent on others for every need;
15and
 
16    WHEREAS, The 24-hour nursing care provided at the Murray
17Center is essential to the well-being of many of its
18residents; and
 
19    WHEREAS, When then-Governor Quinn announced plans to close
20the Murray Center in 2012, his attempts were unsuccessful as a
21result of the efforts made by the Murray Parents Association;

1    WHEREAS, Since that time, the Murray Parents Association
2has continued to work tirelessly to help others understand the
3value and importance of the Murray Center; and
 
4    WHEREAS, For 50 years, the Murray Parents Association
5members have volunteered their time to promote the general
6welfare of the residents of the Murray Center and foster the
7development of programs on their behalf; therefore, be it
 
8    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
9HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
10we congratulate the Murray Parents Association on its 50th
11anniversary; and be it further
 
12    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
13presented to the Murray Parents Association on its 50th
14anniversary as an expression of our esteem and respect.
