HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Dorothy
4Dawson, who passed away on November 17, 2021; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Dorothy Dawson was born on October 23, 1930; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Dorothy Dawson was a track and field pioneer and
7youth advocate; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Dorothy Dawson was a long-time teacher, the vice
9principal, and the Dean of Girls at Dunbar Vocational High
10School in the Bronzeville neighborhood of Chicago's South
11Side; she organized a track and field program for girls at
12Dunbar before the sport became recognized and helped many
13young women earn full scholarships to college; she retired
14from teaching in the Chicago Public School system after 35
15years of service in 1997; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Dorothy Dawson held numerous positions in the USA
17Track and Field (USATF) Illinois Association over the years,
18including serving on the Youth Athletics Executive Committee,
19chairing the Youth Regional Committee, and serving as
20president from 2000 to 2013; she received the USATF
21President's Award for her many decades of distinguished

1service in 1998; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Dorothy Dawson served as a delegate to USA Track
3and Field's Constitutional Convention in 1979; she was the
4first female to be inducted into the Illinois Track and Cross
5Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1981; she received
6several awards, including the Frank Sevigne Award and Robert
7Giegengack Award; she was honored with the launch of the
8annual Dorothy Dawson Invitational at Proviso High School in
9Hillside in 2009; therefore, be it
 
10    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
11HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
12we mourn the passing of Dorothy Dawson and extend our sincere
13condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved
14her; and be it further
 
15    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
16presented to the family of Dorothy Dawson as an expression of
17our deepest sympathy.
