HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The first day of April is celebrated annually as
3the Assyrian New Year, also known as Kha b'Nissan or Akitu; and
 
4    WHEREAS, The Assyrian New Year is not only the first day of
5the new year but also marks the start of spring and serves as a
6symbol of revival; and
 
7    WHEREAS, According to the Assyrian Policy Institute,
8Illinois is home to more than 80,000 Assyrian Americans; and
 
9    WHEREAS, The Assyrian New Year serves to remind the State
10of Illinois of the many substantial contributions the Assyrian
11community has made to Illinois and the social fabric of our
12state; and
 
13    WHEREAS, In their various countries of origin, including
14Iraq, Syria, Turkey, and Iran, governing authorities
15historically infringed on the cultural and linguistic rights
16of Assyrians and prohibited public celebrations of the
17Assyrian New Year; and
 
18    WHEREAS, It is imperative that members of the Assyrian
19community across the globe feel seen, valued, and encouraged
20to celebrate and preserve their cultural heritage; therefore,

2    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
3HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
4we recognize the cultural importance and history surrounding
5the observance of the Assyrian New Year for Assyrian
6Americans; and be it further
 
7    RESOLVED, That we join the Assyrian-American community
8across Illinois in celebrating the Assyrian New Year and wish
9all who observe this holiday a healthy and prosperous new
10year; and be it further
 
11    RESOLVED, That we express our appreciation for the
12vibrancy, tenacity, and contributions of the Assyrian-American
13community.
