SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Dr. Truman O. Anderson Jr. of Oak
4Park, who passed away on July 6, 2019 at the age of 92; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Dr. Anderson was born to Dr. Truman O. Anderson
6Sr. and Myrtle V. (Andersen) Anderson on March 26, 1927; he was
7a native of Chicago's South Side Roseland neighborhood; he
8grew up in Glenwood and attended Bloom High School in Chicago
9Heights; he served as a hospital corpsman in the U.S. Navy
10during World War II; he obtained his bachelor's degree from
11the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1950; he
12earned his Master of Science in Microbiology in 1952 and his
13Ph.D. in Microbiology in 1955; he earned his M.D. from the
14University of Illinois at Chicago's College of Medicine in
151960; he married Mary Ann Heineken in Emden in 1953, and they
16moved to Oak Park in 1960; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Dr. Anderson taught at both the University of
18Illinois at Chicago (UIC) and the Cook County Hospital for 10
19years; he held professorships in both medicine and
20microbiology, including the Keeton Professorship; he
21transitioned to administration at UIC in 1969; he was the dean
22of the School of Basic Sciences from 1970 to 1976; he served as
23executive dean of UIC's four medical campuses in Chicago,

1Rockford, Peoria, and Urbana-Champaign from 1976 to 1980; he
2established UIC College of Medicine's James Scholar Program
3for Independent Study, which he led for many years; alongside
4many of his colleagues, he helped maintain the independence of
5the University of Illinois Hospital in Chicago in 1989; he
6retired in 2011; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Dr. Anderson received the Conscience of the
8College Award in recognition of his lifetime service from UIC
9College of Medicine in 2007; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Dr. Anderson served on the Oak Park and River
11Forest High School Board from 1978 to 1980; he was active in
12the Oak Park community for many years; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Dr. Anderson was known for the importance he
14placed on family life, and he reveled in the company of his
15children and grandchildren; and
 
16    WHEREAS, At the time of his death, Dr. Anderson was
17survived by his children, Mary Beth Logas, Barbara (Richard)
18Hickey, Truman O. Anderson III (Caroline Humes), and Amy
19Anderson (David) de Jong; his grandchildren, William Logas,
20Daniel (Kristen) Logas, Richard Hickey, Meghan Hickey,
21Elizabeth Hickey, Kelly Hickey, Sean Hickey, Erik Anderson,
22Eleanor Anderson, Evan de Jong, and Sonja de Jong; therefore,

2    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL
3ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
4Dr. Truman O. Anderson Jr. and extend our sincere condolences
5to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be
6it further
 
7    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
8presented to the family of Dr. Anderson as an expression of our
9deepest sympathy.
