SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Donald Hacker "Don" Scherwat, who
4passed away on on March 10, 2020; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Don Scherwat was born in Chicago to Josephine and
6Bill Scherwat on September 15, 1927; he graduated from Senn
7High School and the University of Illinois, where he was a
8member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity and was captain of the
9swimming team; he served in the U.S. Navy in World War II
10aboard the LST 1026 in the Pacific; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Don Scherwat began work as a teacher in District
1264 in North Chicago and was drafted into the U.S. Army during
13the Korean War; he served in Japan, playing the trombone in the
14band, welcoming dignitaries off the plane, and playing in
15honky tonk bars at night; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Don Scherwat returned to his teaching career and
17was soon offered the job of business manager for District 64,
18where he spent his entire career; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Don Scherwat retired and spent his days at the
20Bonnie Brook Golf Course selling golf balls and fishing in
21Iron River, Wisconsin whenever he could; he moved to Florida

1in 2007 after the passing of Rosemary and met the second love
2of his life, Annie Yates; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Don Scherwat was an expert swimmer; he worked as
4a lifeguard on Lake Michigan at the Chicago beaches, and his
5love of water continued with a 60-year fishing tradition, the
6Skal Cup Memorial Day fishing tournament, which carries on
7through his grandsons; he treasured his friendships,
8especially a group of lifelong friends who called themselves
9the Lucky Club and played golf and had raucous holiday parties
10together; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Don Scherwat played competitive volleyball into
12his 60s with men half his age; he was honored by the AARP for
1320 years of volunteer tax preparation; he was also a
14prize-winning gardener; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Don Scherwat was preceded in death by his wife,
16Rosemary (Musso); his parents; his brother, Bob Scherwat; and
17his sister, Carole Muret; and
 
18    WHEREAS, At the time of his death, Don Scherwat was
19survived by his daughters, Tish (Ken) Pasiewicz and Mary Ellen
20Montavon (Dennis Hildebrand); his grandsons, Mike and Scott
21Ratkiewicz; his Florida soul mate, Annie Yates; and his nieces
22and nephews; therefore, be it

1    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL
2ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
3Donald Hacker "Don" Scherwat and extend our sincere
4condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved
5him; and be it further
 
6    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
7presented to the family of Don Scherwat as an expression of our
8deepest sympathy.
