SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Children learn gender roles and gender
3stereotypes through products with which they interact at the
4earliest ages of development; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Society has realized that gender distinctions are
6influenced by children's products and the advertising and
7marketing thereof; and
 
8    WHEREAS, In modern societies, the advertising industry
9plays a major role in the media landscape; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Advertising is a very powerful form of social
11communication, offering a concentrated set of images and ideas
12that appeals to children's emotions and, thereby, shapes their
13values, attitudes, and understanding of the world; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Due to the advertising industry's normative power
15to reflect daily life, it shapes children's understanding of
16gender; and
 
17    WHEREAS, The advertising industry plays a vital role in
18constructing, or deconstructing, gender roles and gender
19equality; and

1    WHEREAS, Addressing gender influencing in advertising is
2central to efforts towards achieving gender equality;
3therefore, be it
 
4    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL
5ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we urge the Federal
6Communication Commission to encourage the advertising industry
7to provide gender inclusive advertising and marketing for
8children's products.
