2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened |
3 | | to learn of the death of John Thomas "Tom" Long of Godfrey, who |
4 | | passed away on January 28, 2022; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, Tom Long was born to Virginia (Fransden) and John |
6 | | D. "Jack" Long in Kankakee on May 3, 1950; he obtained his |
7 | | Bachelor of Science in Business and Accounting from Eastern |
8 | | Illinois University, where was a founding member of the Sigma |
9 | | Chi Fraternity; he earned his Juris Doctor from Southern |
10 | | Methodist University School of Law and his C.P.A. from the |
11 | | University of Illinois; he served in the U.S. Army; he married |
12 | | Robin L. Barton on March 10, 2001; and
|
13 | | WHEREAS, Tom Long served as a law clerk for the U.S. |
14 | | Department of Justice and Locke, Purnell, Laney & Neely, P.C.; |
15 | | he was a tax specialist with Coopers & Lybrand, CPAs; he served |
16 | | as Madison County Assistant State's Attorney under both Don |
17 | | Weber and William Haine; he was C.E.O. and vice chairman of the |
18 | | Argosy Gaming Company; he was chairman of the board and |
19 | | principal shareholder of First National Bank of Grant Park and |
20 | | First Community Bank of Godfrey; and
|
21 | | WHEREAS, Tom Long was a member of the White House Advance |
22 | | Office, the Presidential Inaugural Commission for the 2001 |

1 | | Bush-Cheney Inauguration, and the Bush-Cheney 2000 Advance |
2 | | Team; he served as site representative for the Bush-Cheney |
3 | | 2000 Victory Train Tour, one of 22 electors of the Electoral |
4 | | College of the Republican Party for the State of Illinois, |
5 | | lead advance representative for former President George W. |
6 | | Bush to Principia College, delegate to the 1988 Republican |
7 | | Convention, and host to President George H. W. Bush in Madison |
8 | | County for the 1988 Lincoln Day Dinner and the September 1988 |
9 | | Campaign Rally in Alton; he also served as Madison County |
10 | | Republican Chairman from 1986 to 1991; and
|
11 | | WHEREAS, Tom Long was licensed to practice law in Illinois |
12 | | and Missouri; he was a partner with Farrell, Heil, Long & St. |
13 | | Peters, P.C.; he was then a partner with Farrell and Long, |
14 | | P.C.; he then served as of counsel with Farrell, Hunter, |
15 | | Hamilton & Julian, P.C.; he was currently serving as of |
16 | | counsel with Sandberg Phoenix & von Gontard, P.C; and
|
17 | | WHEREAS, Tom Long was a member of the Illinois State Bar |
18 | | Association, the Madison County Bar Association, the |
19 | | Alton-Wood River Bar Association, the Chicago Bar Association, |
20 | | the Illinois CPA Society, the Illinois Community Bankers |
21 | | Association, the Southern Illinois Employers Association, OSF |
22 | | St. Anthony's Health Center Board of Directors, and the |
23 | | Southwestern Illinois Growth Association; he was a member of |
24 | | Vaughn Hill Church of Christ; and

1 | | WHEREAS, Tom Long received the Significant Sig Award from |
2 | | the Sigma Chi Fraternity in 2017; and

3 | | WHEREAS, Tom Long was preceded in death by his parents; |
4 | | his brother, Stephen Long; his niece and goddaughter, |
5 | | Jacqueline "Jackie" Long; his brother-in-law, Michael Collier; |
6 | | his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Lawrence and Martha |
7 | | Barton; and his nephew, Joshua Condellone; and
|
8 | | WHEREAS, Tom Long is survived by his wife; his daughters, |
9 | | Margaret (Mike) Long Kohl, Erin (Joe) Long Mays, and Emma |
10 | | Long; his grandchildren, Charlotte, Barrett, Louis, Marion, |
11 | | Elsie, and John; his former wife, Virginia M. Long; his |
12 | | brothers, Mike (Suzanne) Long, Dennis (Anne) Long, and Jeff |
13 | | (Diane) Long; his sisters, Mary Jo (John) Snyder and Mary Beth |
14 | | (Terry Siefert) Collier; his numerous nieces, nephews, |
15 | | great-nieces, and great-nephews; his brother-in-law, Ron |
16 | | (Cheryl) Barton; and his sister-in-law, Rhonda (Patrick) |
17 | | Linders; therefore, be it

18 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL |
19 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of |
20 | | John Thomas "Tom" Long and extend our sincere condolences to |
21 | | his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it |
