2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened | ||||||
3 | to learn of the death of Mattie Mae Stanberry, who passed away | ||||||
4 | on April 13, 2022; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Mattie Stanberry was born to Theora Dumas Hicks | ||||||
6 | Brown and Samuel Hicks in Barnesville, Georgia on April 22, | ||||||
7 | 1923; she was raised by her maternal grandfather, Joe Dumas, | ||||||
8 | and her step-grandmother, Mattie Phinizee Dumas; she completed | ||||||
9 | her primary and secondary education in Barnesville; she | ||||||
10 | married Charlie Russell in Barnesville, and he preceded her in | ||||||
11 | death; they had one son, Anthony; she later moved to | ||||||
12 | Cleveland, Ohio and then Chicago; she married Clarence | ||||||
13 | McKinley Sr., and he preceded her in death; they had one son, | ||||||
14 | Clarence Jr.; she married Stewart Stanberry in August 1968, | ||||||
15 | and he preceded her in death in 1999; and
| ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, Mattie Stanberry worked for SRA, a division of | ||||||
17 | IBM; she retired after over 30 years of service in 1981; and
| ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, Mattie Stanberry committed to her faith at an | ||||||
19 | early age; she was an active member of South Congregational | ||||||
20 | Church, which later merged with University Church, where she | ||||||
21 | attended regularly for a combined total of over 60 years and | ||||||
22 | often hosted the coffee hour; she was a founding member of the |

1 | Hicks Family Reunion and an active member of the West Woodlawn | ||||||
2 | Women's Community Club; and
| ||||||
3 | WHEREAS, Mattie Stanberry loved traveling and spent each | ||||||
4 | winter in Oceanside, California; she also enjoyed cooking and | ||||||
5 | hosting cookouts, bid whist parties, and holiday dinners; she | ||||||
6 | was an avid gardener and an excellent dancer; she loved being | ||||||
7 | around her family and friends; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, Mattie Stanberry was preceded in death by her | ||||||
9 | sons, Anthony and Clarence Jr.; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Mattie Stanberry is survived by her | ||||||
11 | daughters-in-law, Annie Russell and Carmella Giles-McKinley; | ||||||
12 | her stepsons, Timothy (Tara) and Tre'Voir (Brittany); her | ||||||
13 | special adopted friend, Gwendolyn Sanders; her special adopted | ||||||
14 | grandchildren, Tony (Rachel) and Andrea; her University Church | ||||||
15 | family; and a host of family and dear friends; therefore, be it
| ||||||
16 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL | ||||||
17 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
| ||||||
18 | Mattie Mae Stanberry and extend our sincere
condolences to her | ||||||
19 | family, friends, and all who knew and loved
her; and be it | ||||||
20 | further

21 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
