SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Mattie Mae Stanberry, who passed away on April 13, 2022; and

WHEREAS, Mattie Stanberry was born to Theora Dumas Hicks Brown and Samuel Hicks in Barnesville, Georgia on April 22, 1923; she was raised by her maternal grandfather, Joe Dumas, and her step-grandmother, Mattie Phinizee Dumas; she completed her primary and secondary education in Barnesville; she married Charlie Russell in Barnesville, and he preceded her in death; they had one son, Anthony; she later moved to Cleveland, Ohio and then Chicago; she married Clarence McKinley Sr., and he preceded her in death; they had one son, Clarence Jr.; she married Stewart Stanberry in August 1968, and he preceded her in death in 1999; and

WHEREAS, Mattie Stanberry worked for SRA, a division of IBM; she retired after over 30 years of service in 1981; and

WHEREAS, Mattie Stanberry committed to her faith at an early age; she was an active member of South Congregational Church, which later merged with University Church, where she attended regularly for a combined total of over 60 years and often hosted the coffee hour; she was a founding member of the Hicks Family Reunion and an active member of the West Woodlawn Women's Community Club; and

WHEREAS, Mattie Stanberry loved traveling and spent each winter in Oceanside, California; she also enjoyed cooking and hosting cookouts, bid whist parties, and holiday dinners; she was an avid gardener and an excellent dancer; she loved being around her family and friends; and

WHEREAS, Mattie Stanberry was preceded in death by her sons, Anthony and Clarence Jr.; and

WHEREAS, Mattie Stanberry is survived by her daughters-in-law, Annie Russell and Carmella Giles-McKinley; her stepsons, Timothy (Tara) and Tre'Voir (Brittany); her special adopted friend, Gwendolyn Sanders; her special adopted grandchildren, Tony (Rachel) and Andrea; her University Church family; and a host of family and dear friends; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Mattie Mae Stanberry and extend our sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Mattie Stanberry as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
