105 ILCS 5/27-17  from Ch. 122, par. 27-17

     Amends the Courses of Study Article of the School Code. With respect to safety education instruction for students enrolled in prekindergarten through grade  6, adds water safety that incorporates the water safety instructional materials and resources developed by the American Red Cross and the Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project or by a district-approved source. Effective immediately.

1    AN ACT concerning education.
  
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
 
3represented in the General Assembly:
  
 
 
4    Section 5. The School Code is amended  by changing Section 
527-17 as follows:
 


6    (105 ILCS 5/27-17)  (from Ch. 122, par. 27-17)




7    Sec. 27-17. Safety education. School boards of public 
8schools and all boards in charge of
educational institutions 
9supported wholly or partially by the State may
provide 
10instruction in safety education in all grades and include such

11instruction in the courses of study regularly taught therein.

12    In this Section, section "safety education" means and 
13includes instruction in
the following:

14        1.  automobile safety, including traffic regulations, 
15    highway
safety, and the consequences of alcohol 
16    consumption and the operation of a motor vehicle;

17        2.  safety in the home, including safe gun storage;

18        3.  safety in connection with recreational activities;

19        4. safety in and around school buildings; 

20        5. safety in connection with vocational work or 
21    training;

22        6. cardio-pulmonary resuscitation for students 
23    enrolled in grades 9 through 11; and

1        7. for students enrolled in grades 6 through 8, 
2    cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and how to use an automated 
3    external defibrillator by watching a training video on 
4    those subjects; and . 
5        8.  for students enrolled in prekindergarten through

6    grade 6, water safety that incorporates the
water safety 
7    instructional materials and resources
developed by the 
8    American Red Cross and the Great Lakes
Surf Rescue Project 
9    or by a district-approved source. 
10    Such boards may make suitable provisions in the schools 
11and
institutions under their jurisdiction for instruction in 
12safety
education for not less than 16 hours during each school 
13year.

14    The curriculum in all educator preparation programs 
15approved by the State Educator Preparation and Licensure Board 
16shall contain instruction in safety education for teachers 
17that is appropriate to the grade level of the educator 
18license. This instruction may be by specific courses in safety 
19education or may be incorporated in existing subjects taught 
20in the educator preparation program.

22    Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon 
23becoming law.
