2 | | AMENDMENT NO. ______. Amend House Bill 3776 by replacing |
3 | | everything after the enacting clause with the following:

4 | | "Section 5. The School Code is amended by adding Section |
5 | | 2-3.196 as follows: |
6 | | (105 ILCS 5/2-3.196 new) |
7 | | Sec. 2-3.196. Crosswalk and alignment. |
8 | | (a) No later than June 1, 2024, the State Board of |
9 | | Education shall, in consultation with science and health |
10 | | education specialists, educators or former educators who teach |
11 | | or have taught the subject of science or health, parents, and |
12 | | medical experts, which may include medical doctors, doctors of |
13 | | osteopathy or osteopathic medicine, registered nurses, |
14 | | chiropractic physicians, exercise physiologists, or physical |
15 | | therapists, create a crosswalk and alignment to the Illinois |
16 | | Learning Standards, the Next Generation Science Standards |

1 | | adopted by the State Board of Education, and the Illinois |
2 | | Learning Standards for Science. The State Board must make the |
3 | | crosswalk and alignment and any accompanying resource |
4 | | materials available on its Internet website, so that |
5 | | elementary school teachers have access to high quality, |
6 | | age-appropriate, and free educational materials that are |
7 | | centered on anatomy, physiology, and nutrition to empower |
8 | | students with the knowledge of their own bodies and to care for |
9 | | their own health and well-being throughout their lives. |
10 | | (b) The crosswalk and alignment required under this |
11 | | Section shall be focused on how to empower students with the |
12 | | knowledge to adequately understand their own bodies and care |
13 | | for their own health and well-being throughout their lives, |
14 | | with the idea that science education is more human-centered. |
15 | | The crosswalk and alignment shall additionally focus on |
16 | | connecting this human-centered science education with other |
17 | | sciences as students advance to other areas of their science |
18 | | education, such as chemistry, biology, and physics, taught at |
19 | | later grade levels. |
20 | | (c) The crosswalk and alignment required under this |
21 | | Section shall include a review of the Illinois Learning |
22 | | Standards for Science and include recommendations to the State |
23 | | Board of Education to update the Illinois Learning Standards |
24 | | for Science by December 31, 2025. |
25 | | (d) No later than December 31, 2030 and, at a minimum, |
26 | | every 5 years thereafter, the State Board of Education shall |
