|
2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
3 | | Representatives wish to congratulate the University of |
4 | | Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria (UICOMP) on the |
5 | | occasion of its 50th anniversary; and
|
6 | | WHEREAS, For half a century, UICOMP has fulfilled a |
7 | | three-part mission of service, education, and research; and
|
8 | | WHEREAS, UICOMP was founded as the Peoria Medical School |
9 | | by a group of local physicians and community leaders in 1970 |
10 | | with the goal to train physicians who would remain in Peoria |
11 | | and central Illinois communities to practice medicine; over |
12 | | the past 50 years, their vision has come to fruition in |
13 | | preparing future physicians, providing clinical services, and |
14 | | conducting impactful research; and
|
15 | | WHEREAS, Today, UICOMP plays a significant role in the |
16 | | regional economy, with healthcare being the largest employment |
17 | | sector in Greater Peoria; and
|
18 | | WHEREAS, According to data from the Greater Peoria |
19 | | Economic Development Council, UICOMP includes 708 healthcare |
20 | | establishments that employ 29,731 people, providing 16% of |
21 | | area jobs; and
|

1 | | WHEREAS, UICOMP trains over 500 medical students, |
2 | | residents, and fellows annually in Peoria, including 244 |
3 | | students in the four-year curriculum; it enrolls 271 residents |
4 | | and fellows in 13 different residency programs and 29 fellows |
5 | | in its eight fellowships; and
|
6 | | WHEREAS, UICOMP's faculty includes 1,369 faculty members |
7 | | responsible for educating and training the future physicians |
8 | | and, of those, 170 are full-time, 80 are part-time, and 1,119 |
9 | | are volunteer; its faculty provides clinical services at OSF |
10 | | Saint Francis Medical Center, Children's Hospital of Illinois, |
11 | | and Carle Health Methodist Hospital, with faculty covering a |
12 | | wide spectrum of clinical services, from pediatrics to |
13 | | neurosurgery to psychiatry, including serving the community |
14 | | both in hospital and ambulatory practice; and
|
15 | | WHEREAS, UICOMP conducts clinical research and outcomes |
16 | | research, and its primary basic science research department is |
17 | | the Cancer Biology and Pharmacology (CBP) Department, where |
18 | | faculty conduct research on cancer biology, neuroscience, and |
19 | | ion channel biology; ongoing research is focused on brain |
20 | | tumors, breast and prostate cancer, Alzheimer's, dementia, |
21 | | stroke, and spinal cord injury, among other areas; and
|
22 | | WHEREAS, UICOMP relies on strong ties and collaboration |

1 | | with its community partners, with two affiliate hospitals |
2 | | within walking distance of campus, providing medical students |
3 | | and residents access to broad clinical experiences with more |
4 | | than 950 licensed hospital beds; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, UICOMP will celebrate its anniversary at its |
6 | | Golden Gala event, which will be held at the Peoria Civic |
7 | | Center on Saturday, September 30, 2023; therefore, be it
|
8 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE |
9 | | HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that |
10 | | we congratulate the University of Illinois College of Medicine |
11 | | at Peoria (UICOMP) on its 50 years of service, education, and |
12 | | research; and be it further

13 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
14 | | presented to UICOMP as an expression of our esteem and |
15 | | respect.
