HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Alton
4Police Department K9 Officer Odin, who was killed in the line
5of duty on August 22, 2024; and
 
6    WHEREAS, K9 Officer Odin was a 20-month-old Belgian
7Malinois/German Shepherd mix who joined the Alton Police
8Department in February 2024; he recently graduated from the
9Illinois State Police Academy as a member of Canine Class #89
10in early May; and
 
11    WHEREAS, K9 Officer Odin and his partner, Officer Allen
12Averbeck, were struck by gunfire while attempting to apprehend
13a suspect who was wanted in connection with a shooting that had
14occurred the night before; Officer Averbeck suffered
15non-life-threatening injuries while K9 Officer Odin tragically
16succumbed to his wounds; and
 
17    WHEREAS, K9 Officer Odin courageously sacrificed his life
18to save the lives of his fellow officers of the Alton Police
19Department; and
 
20    WHEREAS, K9 Officer Odin and his partner, Officer
21Averbeck, were dedicated to protecting and serving their

1community and apprehending violent offenders; Officer Averbeck
2is left with the responsibility of carrying out their duties
3in his honor; therefore, be it
 
4    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
5HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
6we mourn the passing of K9 Officer Odin and extend our sincere
7condolences to Officer Averbeck, the Alton Police Department,
8and all those who loved him; and be it further
 
9    RESOLVED, That we thank K9 Officer Odin and Officer
10Averbeck for the sacrifices they have made in service to their
11community; and be it further
 
12    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
13presented to the Alton Police Department and Officer Averbeck
14as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
