2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate wish to | ||||||
3 | congratulate Emil Garippo on the occasion of his 100th | ||||||
4 | birthday and thank him for his military service during World | ||||||
5 | War II; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Emil Garippo was born to immigrant Italian | ||||||
7 | parents and raised in the Chicago neighborhood of Little | ||||||
8 | Italy; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, Emil Garippo enlisted in the U.S. military during | ||||||
10 | World War II in 1944, joining his brother, Mike, who was | ||||||
11 | deployed overseas; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, After serving in World War II, Emil Garippo's | ||||||
13 | arrival home led him to meeting his future wife of 74 years, | ||||||
14 | Dean Ruggs; and
| ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, Emil Garippo followed his late brother's lead and | ||||||
16 | entered college, graduating with a degree in education from | ||||||
17 | DePaul University in 1949 and later earning his master's | ||||||
18 | degree; in doing so, he became among the earliest Americans to | ||||||
19 | benefit from the G.I. Bill and the first in his family to earn | ||||||
20 | a college degree; and

1 | WHEREAS, Emil Garippo started teaching in Chicago, rising | ||||||
2 | to assistant principal of Spalding High School, one of the | ||||||
3 | nation's first public schools for children with disabilities; | ||||||
4 | noted by administrators for his talent, he was brought to the | ||||||
5 | central office to help oversee citywide transportation; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Emil Garippo and his family moved to Elmhurst in | ||||||
7 | 1951; within a few years, much of his extended family | ||||||
8 | followed, including his parents and his sister's family; now, | ||||||
9 | many generational relatives live in the area thanks to him; | ||||||
10 | and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, Emil Garippo still works out daily, with a break | ||||||
12 | on weekends, spending 20 minutes on his stationary bike before | ||||||
13 | completing a series of yoga-like exercises; he has never | ||||||
14 | undergone surgery and only started using a walker and hearing | ||||||
15 | aids in the last few years; and
| ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, Emil Garippo watches the news and sports every | ||||||
17 | day, but he mostly enjoys spending time with his children, | ||||||
18 | four grandchildren, and now two great-grandchildren, wishing | ||||||
19 | them all to have a good life and to do the right thing; | ||||||
20 | therefore, be it

21 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL | ||||||
22 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate Emil |

2 | service and sacrifice to the United States of America, and | ||||||
3 | wish him the best in all his future endeavors; and be it | ||||||
