2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened | ||||||
3 | to learn of the death of Lynn Ryburn Laughlin, who passed away | ||||||
4 | on July 11, 2023; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Lynn Laughlin was born to Ernest E. and Naomi | ||||||
6 | (McFadin) Laughlin in Massillon, Ohio on June 24, 1942; he | ||||||
7 | obtained a bachelor's degree in preaching, a master's degree | ||||||
8 | in New Testament, and an honorary doctorate of divinity from | ||||||
9 | Lincoln Christian College, now Lincoln Christian University, | ||||||
10 | where he served on the Student Cabinet and played on the | ||||||
11 | basketball team; he also earned a bachelor's degree from | ||||||
12 | Millikin University and a master's degree from Illinois State | ||||||
13 | University, both in physical education; he married Lois Evelyn | ||||||
14 | Whitlatch at Jefferson Street Christian Church in Lincoln on | ||||||
15 | June 1, 1979, and they enjoyed 44 years of love and | ||||||
16 | partnership; and
| ||||||
17 | WHEREAS, Lynn Laughlin devoted 56 years of his life in | ||||||
18 | service to Lincoln Christian University, serving in the roles | ||||||
19 | of basketball coach, athletic director, professor of the New | ||||||
20 | Testament and physical education, director of student | ||||||
21 | services, dean of men, director of recruitment, vice president | ||||||
22 | of student development, vice president of alumni services, and | ||||||
23 | special assistant to the president; he also served as a |

1 | minister, guest preaching and officiating at hundreds of | ||||||
2 | baptisms, weddings, and funerals; and
| ||||||
3 | WHEREAS, Lynn Laughlin was a long-time leader in Rotary | ||||||
4 | International and a multi-term president of the Rotary Club of | ||||||
5 | Lincoln; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, In 2017, Lynn Laughlin was honored as the only | ||||||
7 | member of faculty or staff to serve over a half century at | ||||||
8 | Lincoln Christian University; in addition, he was a Lincoln | ||||||
9 | Christian University Hall of Fame inductee; he was also a | ||||||
10 | recipient of the Paul Harris Award, the Rotary Club's highest | ||||||
11 | honor; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, Lynn Laughlin was a man of integrity and humility | ||||||
13 | with an ageless energy, an easy smile, and a full-throated | ||||||
14 | laugh, in addition to an abiding devotion to St. Louis | ||||||
15 | Cardinals baseball; and
| ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, Lynn Laughlin will be remembered as an | ||||||
17 | irreplaceable coach, mentor, colleague, uncle, brother, | ||||||
18 | father, husband, and friend; and | ||||||
19 | WHEREAS, Lynn Laughlin was preceded in death by his | ||||||
20 | parents and his brother, Kirby; and

1 | WHEREAS, Lynn Laughlin is survived by wife; his brother, | ||||||
2 | David (Jeanie) Laughlin; his sons, Stephen (Jeannie) Laughlin | ||||||
3 | and Marty Laughlin; his daughters, Melissa (Kevin) Fry, Tasha | ||||||
4 | (Kevin) Palzkill, and Sarah Laughlin; his grandchildren, | ||||||
5 | Colin, Kendra, Tori, Allie, Josie, Jackson, and Rilee; and a | ||||||
6 | great-grandchild; therefore, be it
| ||||||
7 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL | ||||||
8 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
| ||||||
9 | Lynn RyBurn Laughlin and extend our sincere
condolences to his | ||||||
10 | family, friends, and all who knew and loved
him; and be it | ||||||
11 | further

12 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
