SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Lynn Ryburn Laughlin, who passed away
4on July 11, 2023; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Lynn Laughlin was born to Ernest E. and Naomi
6(McFadin) Laughlin in Massillon, Ohio on June 24, 1942; he
7obtained a bachelor's degree in preaching, a master's degree
8in New Testament, and an honorary doctorate of divinity from
9Lincoln Christian College, now Lincoln Christian University,
10where he served on the Student Cabinet and played on the
11basketball team; he also earned a bachelor's degree from
12Millikin University and a master's degree from Illinois State
13University, both in physical education; he married Lois Evelyn
14Whitlatch at Jefferson Street Christian Church in Lincoln on
15June 1, 1979, and they enjoyed 44 years of love and
16partnership; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Lynn Laughlin devoted 56 years of his life in
18service to Lincoln Christian University, serving in the roles
19of basketball coach, athletic director, professor of the New
20Testament and physical education, director of student
21services, dean of men, director of recruitment, vice president
22of student development, vice president of alumni services, and
23special assistant to the president; he also served as a

1minister, guest preaching and officiating at hundreds of
2baptisms, weddings, and funerals; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Lynn Laughlin was a long-time leader in Rotary
4International and a multi-term president of the Rotary Club of
5Lincoln; and
 
6    WHEREAS, In 2017, Lynn Laughlin was honored as the only
7member of faculty or staff to serve over a half century at
8Lincoln Christian University; in addition, he was a Lincoln
9Christian University Hall of Fame inductee; he was also a
10recipient of the Paul Harris Award, the Rotary Club's highest
11honor; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Lynn Laughlin was a man of integrity and humility
13with an ageless energy, an easy smile, and a full-throated
14laugh, in addition to an abiding devotion to St. Louis
15Cardinals baseball; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Lynn Laughlin will be remembered as an
17irreplaceable coach, mentor, colleague, uncle, brother,
18father, husband, and friend; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Lynn Laughlin was preceded in death by his
20parents and his brother, Kirby; and

1    WHEREAS, Lynn Laughlin is survived by wife; his brother,
2David (Jeanie) Laughlin; his sons, Stephen (Jeannie) Laughlin
3and Marty Laughlin; his daughters, Melissa (Kevin) Fry, Tasha
4(Kevin) Palzkill, and Sarah Laughlin; his grandchildren,
5Colin, Kendra, Tori, Allie, Josie, Jackson, and Rilee; and a
6great-grandchild; therefore, be it
 
7    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL
8ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
9Lynn RyBurn Laughlin and extend our sincere condolences to his
10family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
11further
 
12    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
13presented to the family of Lynn Laughlin as an expression of
14our deepest sympathy.
