2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened |
3 | | to learn of the death of John Henry Knaack of Moline, who |
4 | | passed away on January 21, 2024; and |
5 | | WHEREAS, John Knaack was born to John H. Knaack Sr. and |
6 | | Mary (Scherer) Knaack in Moline on March 28, 1925; he enlisted |
7 | | in the U.S. Navy before completing his high school education |
8 | | and served during World War II; he was honored with several |
9 | | medals, including the European African Middle Eastern Area |
10 | | Campaign Medal, the American Area Campaign Medal, the |
11 | | Asiatic-Pacific Area Campaign Medal, the Victory Medal, and |
12 | | the Philippine Liberation Medal; after his honorable discharge |
13 | | in 1946, he obtained his G.E.D.; he married Fanchon "Penny" |
14 | | Nelson in Moline on November 1, 1946, and they enjoyed 70 years |
15 | | of companionship before she preceded him in death in 2016; and |
16 | | WHEREAS, John Knaack's professional life was characterized |
17 | | by hard work and entrepreneurship; he spent the majority of |
18 | | his career as a respected employee with A.D. Huesing; his |
19 | | entrepreneurial spirit led to him owning and operating his own |
20 | | construction company, Contract Roofing; and |
21 | | WHEREAS, John Knaack was an active member of the Left Bank |
22 | | Art League, where he shared his passion for creativity and |

1 | | artistry; he was a man of many interests, including painting, |
2 | | flower gardening, bird watching, and fishing; he enjoyed |
3 | | spending countless hours at his camp in Hillsdale on the Rock |
4 | | River immersed in the tranquility of nature, often with family |
5 | | and friends by his side; and |
6 | | WHEREAS, John Knaack was a beloved father, grandfather, |
7 | | and great-grandfather; he was known for leading a full life |
8 | | marked by service, dedication to his family, and a multitude |
9 | | of interests that brought joy to himself and those around him; |
10 | | he will be remembered for his friendly, thoughtful, and kind |
11 | | nature; and |
12 | | WHEREAS, John Knaack was preceded in death by his parents; |
13 | | his sisters, Katherine and Mary; and his brother, George; and |
14 | | WHEREAS, John Knaack is survived by his children, Georgia |
15 | | (Kent) Stevens, John (Trudy) Knaack, and Julie (Tim) Mills; |
16 | | his grandchildren, Todd (Marni) Stevens, Brett (Brandy) |
17 | | Stevens, Jennifer (Michael) Zambrano, Sara (Jayme) Eckert, |
18 | | Lindsay (Brian) Bell, and Katherine (Jason) Stewart; and 15 |
19 | | great-grandchildren; therefore, be it |
