2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened | ||||||
3 | to learn of the death of Captain Kevin M. Hargis of the Joliet | ||||||
4 | Fire Department, who passed away on June 29, 2024; and | ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Capt. Hargis, the son of Larry and Charlotte | ||||||
6 | Hargis, was born on August 28, 1972; he was dedicated to | ||||||
7 | achieving professional excellence through education, earning | ||||||
8 | nearly every certification for firefighters in the State of | ||||||
9 | Illinois, completing many at advanced levels; and | ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Capt. Hargis was a 22-year veteran of the Joliet | ||||||
11 | Fire Department, serving as captain of Fire Station No. 7 at | ||||||
12 | the time of his passing; he began his firefighting career with | ||||||
13 | the Roberts Park Fire Protection District in Justice in 1992; | ||||||
14 | he proceeded to serve with the Pleasantview Fire Protection | ||||||
15 | District for a few years before joining the Joliet Fire | ||||||
16 | Department in 2002, where he also served as a member and | ||||||
17 | coordinator of the Hazardous Materials Team, a member of the | ||||||
18 | Safety Committee, a CPR instructor, a coordinator, and a | ||||||
19 | trainer; and | ||||||
20 | WHEREAS, In addition to his roles within the fire service, | ||||||
21 | Capt. Hargis was a board-certified emergency nurse and a | ||||||
22 | paramedic instructor, and he was a former faculty member of |

1 | Joliet Junior College; and | ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, Capt. Hargis was a member of Alpha Delta Nu | ||||||
3 | National Honor Society under the Organization for Associate | ||||||
4 | Degree Nursing, Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, the National | ||||||
5 | Association of EMS Educators, the National Association of | ||||||
6 | EMTs, the International Association of Firefighters, the | ||||||
7 | Illinois Society of Fire Service Instructors, and Joliet | ||||||
8 | Firefighters Local 44; and | ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, Capt. Hargis was a devoted husband who loved | ||||||
10 | spending time outdoors and traveling with his wife, Amy, and | ||||||
11 | their dogs; and | ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, Capt. Hargis was known for his lighthearted | ||||||
13 | personality, his passion for helping others, and his nickname, | ||||||
14 | "Big Buddy"; he will be remembered for his service to and his | ||||||
15 | impact on his community; and | ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, Capt. Hargis was preceded in death by his | ||||||
17 | in-laws, Ronald and Catherine Szarzynski; and | ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, Capt. Hargis is survived by his wife of 19 years, | ||||||
19 | Amy Theresia (Billapando) Hargis; his parents; his brothers, | ||||||
20 | Lawrence Hargis and Michael Hargis; his sister, Judy (Kurt) | ||||||
21 | Sedlacek; and numerous nieces and nephews; therefore, be it |

1 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL | ||||||
2 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
3 | Captain Kevin M. Hargis of the Joliet Fire Department and | ||||||
4 | extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all | ||||||
5 | who knew and loved him; and be it further | ||||||
6 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
7 | presented to the family of Capt. Hargis as an expression of our | ||||||
8 | deepest sympathy. |
