1 | SENATE RESOLUTION | ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate wish to | ||||||
3 | congratulate Morton College on the occasion of the 100th | ||||||
4 | anniversary of its founding; and | ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Morton College first opened its doors on | ||||||
6 | September 15, 1924 with 11 teachers and 76 students under the | ||||||
7 | direction of its first president, Harry Victor Church, who | ||||||
8 | made Morton a peoples' college with terminal courses for | ||||||
9 | better citizenship as well as preparation for university; and | ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Morton College is the second oldest community | ||||||
11 | college in Illinois; and | ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, Morton College has evolved from its humble | ||||||
13 | beginnings on the third floor at Morton East High School to its | ||||||
14 | current campus in Cicero, allowing the college to have served | ||||||
15 | more than a quarter of a million students across Berwyn, | ||||||
16 | Cicero, Forest View, Lyons, McCook, and Stickney; and | ||||||
17 | WHEREAS, Morton College is committed to its mission of | ||||||
18 | enhancing the quality of life of its diverse community through | ||||||
19 | providing exemplary teaching and learning opportunities, | ||||||
20 | recognizing the value of community service, and promoting | ||||||
21 | life-long learning; and |

1 | WHEREAS, Morton College strives to prepare leaders in all | ||||||
2 | walks of life by offering opportunities for career advancement | ||||||
3 | through six degree programs, 37 certificate programs, and a | ||||||
4 | pathway to transfer to a university for a four-year degree; | ||||||
5 | and | ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Morton College provides programming in the arts, | ||||||
7 | theater, music, and athletics to foster creativity and unity | ||||||
8 | throughout the region; and | ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, Morton College is committed to educational | ||||||
10 | innovation through its university transfer program and | ||||||
11 | expansion of educational opportunities to include career, | ||||||
12 | community, and adult education programs that serve all ages | ||||||
13 | from eight to 88; and | ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Morton College graduates have served their | ||||||
15 | communities as elected officials, as police and firefighters, | ||||||
16 | and as educators; and | ||||||
17 | WHEREAS, Morton College graduates provide valuable care | ||||||
18 | for their communities as nurses, physical therapist | ||||||
19 | assistants, and doctors; and | ||||||
20 | WHEREAS, Morton College graduates improve the quality of |

1 | life for their community members through vital car and heating | ||||||
2 | systems repairs, maintenance of our information superhighway, | ||||||
3 | and through the local businesses they have built to meet the | ||||||
4 | needs of our families; and | ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Morton College graduates bring neighbors together | ||||||
6 | through their talents in college and professional sports, | ||||||
7 | music, television, news, and movies; and | ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, Morton College recently started the 2024-2025 | ||||||
9 | academic year with over 5,500 students and the announcement of | ||||||
10 | exciting new exterior campus renovations that will enhance the | ||||||
11 | student experience; therefore, be it | ||||||
12 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL | ||||||
13 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate Morton | ||||||
14 | College on the 100th anniversary of its founding; and be it | ||||||
15 | further | ||||||
16 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
17 | presented to Morton College President Dr. Keith McLaughlin as | ||||||
18 | a symbol of our respect and esteem. |
