2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened | ||||||
3 | to learn of the death of Janice E. Curry, who passed away on | ||||||
4 | September 7, 2024; and | ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Janice Curry, the daughter of Herbert Lomax and | ||||||
6 | Anna Walker-Gillespie, was born in Maywood on June 20, 1948; | ||||||
7 | she attended Washington Elementary School and graduated from | ||||||
8 | Proviso East High School in 1966; she then studied pre-law at | ||||||
9 | Northwestern Business College; she married Johnny Curry at | ||||||
10 | Second Baptist Church in 1967, and they later divorced; and | ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, Janice Curry worked as an executive assistant at | ||||||
12 | International Harvester and Commonwealth Edison; although her | ||||||
13 | career took her into the corporate world, she also worked to | ||||||
14 | support those in need, embracing that purpose at the Proviso | ||||||
15 | Leyden Council for Community Action; and | ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, Janice Curry was a devoted woman of faith; she | ||||||
17 | was baptized as a child at the family's church, Second | ||||||
18 | Baptist, but later became a member of James Memorial AME | ||||||
19 | Church in 1984; she was an active member for 44 years, serving | ||||||
20 | in the sanctuary choir; her greatest spiritual milestone was | ||||||
21 | when she traveled to Jerusalem and was baptized in the Holy | ||||||
22 | Land in 1990; and |

1 | WHEREAS, Janice Curry published the book A Miracle in the | ||||||
2 | Midst, which detailed her journey of faith and resilience | ||||||
3 | after a near-death experience; and | ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, Janice Curry love bowling and was a member of | ||||||
5 | leagues at Superbowl and Rivera Lanes; she was an avid fan of | ||||||
6 | basketball and football playoff pools; she also enjoyed quiet | ||||||
7 | time, immersing herself in morning devotions and enjoying word | ||||||
8 | searches and adult coloring books; and | ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, Janice Curry was known for her humor and empathy; | ||||||
10 | her door was always open to those in need, and she offered | ||||||
11 | solace and wisdom to those who sought her counsel; her love for | ||||||
12 | her family was limitless, and she always made herself | ||||||
13 | available to support or guide her children; and | ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Janice Curry was preceded in death by her | ||||||
15 | granddaughter, Aaliah Curry; and | ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, Janice Curry is survived by her children, Deena | ||||||
17 | (Derrick) Vassel, Antoine (Shebkra "Beka") Curry, and Portia | ||||||
18 | (Victor) Davenport; her sister, Senita Simpson; 13 | ||||||
19 | grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, | ||||||
20 | nephews, cousins, extended family, and friends; therefore, be | ||||||
21 | it |

1 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL | ||||||
2 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
3 | Janice Curry and extend our sincere condolences to her family, | ||||||
4 | friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it further | ||||||
5 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
6 | presented to the family of Janice Curry as an expression of our | ||||||
7 | deepest sympathy. |
