HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, Pedestrians have been killed or injured by trains
3 at railroad crossings in northeastern Illinois; and
 
4     WHEREAS, A fifth grade student, Michael S. DeLarco of
5 Schaumburg, was killed in one of these incidents on February
6 23, 2004; and
 
7     WHEREAS, All persons recognize the urgent need to prevent
8 tragedies of this kind in the future; therefore, be it
 
9     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
10 NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE
11 SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we urge the Illinois Commerce
12 Commission to perform a study of the crossing gates and other
13 protective devices currently in use at those railroad crossings
14 in northeastern Illinois, where pedestrian traffic is allowed
15 by law, to determine the adequacy of those gates and other
16 devices and whether additional steps should be taken to
17 increase the safety of those crossings; and be it further
 
18     RESOLVED, that we urge the Commission to present a report
19 of its findings to the Governor, the Secretary of
20 Transportation, and the General Assembly, no later than March
21 31, 2005; and be it further
 
22     RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
23 delivered to the Governor, to the Secretary of Transportation,
24 and to the chairman and members of the Illinois Commerce
25 Commission.
