HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of the
3 State of Illinois learned with regret of the death of Patrick
4 J. Cleary on Sunday, April 25, 2004; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Mr. Cleary was born on January 20, 1929, in
6 Momence to James A. and Nellie Liston Cleary; and
 
7     WHEREAS, Mr. Cleary had been the publisher/editor of the
8 Farmers Weekly Review since 1963; his long career in journalism
9 started at the age of 15, when he went to work at the Kankakee
10 Daily Journal; he also worked at the Gary Post Tribune and for
11 the Associated Press as well as many other newspapers during
12 his journalistic career; and
 
13     WHEREAS, Mr. Cleary was a former City Clerk in Kankakee and
14 the Secretary of the Police and Fire Commissions; he served as
15 County Clerk and Clerk of the Courts in Kankakee County; he was
16 appointed by Governor Richard Ogilvie as Chairman of the Board
17 of Review for the Department of Labor, a position he held from
18 1965 until 1973; and
 
19     WHEREAS, Mr. Cleary was a member of the Board of Directors
20 of the International Press Club of Chicago and a former 37-year
21 member of the Old Chicago Press Club; he also held memberships
22 with the Chicago Press Veterans Association, the National Press
23 Club of Washington, D.C., and the Indianapolis Press Club; he
24 was a member and past Exalted Ruler of the Joliet Elks Lodge
25 No. 296 and a former chairman of the Board of Trustees; he was
26 named Illinois Elk of the Year in 1995; he served as a past
27 State public relations chairman for the Illinois Elks
28 Association; he was a member of Kankakee Moose Lodge No. 802
29 and an honorary life member of the Knights of Columbus in
30 Kankakee, third and fourth degree member; he was also a member
31 of the Illinois Farm Editors Association; and

1     WHEREAS, Mr. Cleary was well-known for his affinity for
2 words, facts, and history; he was an avid reader, especially
3 favoring historical and biographical works; and
 
4     WHEREAS, The passing of Patrick J. Cleary has been deeply
5 felt by many, especially his sons and daughter-in-law, James A.
6 and Gail Cleary and Michael J. Cleary; his son-in-law, Patrick
7 Hickey; and his 5 grandchildren, Patrick Cleary, Daniel Cleary,
8 Nora Hickey, Conor Hickey, and Clare Hickey; he was preceded in
9 death by his daughter, Mary Hickey; his parents; his sister,
10 Rita Jean Cleary; and his half-sister, Mary Betcher; therefore,
11 be it
 
12     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
13 NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
14 mourn the passing of Patrick J. Cleary, and we extend our
15 deepest sympathy to his family, friends, and all who knew and
16 loved him; and be it further
 
17     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
18 presented to the family of Patrick J. Cleary as an expression
19 of our sincere condolences.
