HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, All too often in our fast paced society the
3 population looks forward to career's end and easier times of
4 retirement; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Some do a little part time work to stay active and
6 earn a little spending money; and
 
7     WHEREAS, Not all fit that cookie cutter mold, and no one
8 personifies this notion of the unretirement retirement better
9 than newspaper columnist Jack Mabley, who has marked the end of
10 another segment of his life with the decision to trade in his
11 Arlington Heights Daily Herald column for an Internet based
12 writing stint; and
 
13     WHEREAS, Jack Mabley's storied career ranges over 12,000
14 columns for nearly every newspaper in the Chicago region and
15 beyond, touching topics and personalities from all walks of
16 life; and
 
17     WHEREAS, His career, which spanned eight decades, put him
18 in a vantage point to cover many major news events from the
19 tragic Texas City, Texas explosion in the 1940s to the Vietnam
20 War and beyond; and
 
21     WHEREAS, Jack Mabley chronicled the lives of many
22 personalities and is known to have taken time off to go snake
23 hunting with legendary zoologist Marlin Perkins and for
24 welcoming the Beatles to Chicago; and
 
25     WHEREAS, He is regarded as the nation's first television
26 critic; and
 
27     WHEREAS, His tireless reporting on the plight of the
28 mentally disabled earned long overdue attention from

1 government officials; and
 
2     WHEREAS, While Jack Mabley was never afraid to reveal
3 government missteps, he tried his hand at elective office,
4 serving as the Mayor of Glenview; and
 
5     WHEREAS, While this month marks another unretirement
6 retirement in the life of Jack Mabley, this House of
7 Representatives of the Ninety-Third General Assembly wishes to
8 take notice; therefore, be it
 
9     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
10 NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
11 Jack Mabley is thanked and saluted for his contributions to the
12 betterment of the lives of all Illinois citizens and is offered
13 the best wishes for much health and happiness and good luck in
14 the endeavors that lie ahead; and be it further
 
15     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
16 presented to Jack Mabley as an expression of our deepest
17 respect and esteem.
