SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate were deeply
3 saddened to learn of the death of Fr. Robert Humbert, S.J.,
4 beloved Jesuit priest and administrator at Loyola Academy in
5 Wilmette for more than 35 years, passed away on June 25, 2004;
6 and
 
7     WHEREAS, Robert Humbert was born on May 7, 1922, in
8 Cincinnati, Ohio; he attended St. Thomas Aquinas grammar school
9 and St. Xavier High School there; on August 31, 1940, soon
10 after his graduation, he entered the Society of Jesus at the
11 novitiate in Milford, Ohio; he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree
12 in Latin and English from Loyola University Chicago in 1945 and
13 a Master of Education degree in Guidance and Statistics in
14 1957; he also earned a licentiate in philosophy (Ph.L) from
15 West Baden College, where he was ordained a priest on June 17,
16 1953; and in 1954, he received the licentiate in Sacred
17 Theology (STL) from West Baden; and
 
18     WHEREAS, Fr. Humbert's principal assignments as a Jesuit
19 saw him as assistant principal at Loyola Academy in Chicago
20 from 1955-1956, and then at St. Xavier High School in
21 Cincinnati from 1957 through 1961; he was appointed principal
22 at St. Xavier in 1961, a position he held until 1963, when he
23 was asked to serve as Socius to the Provincial in Oak Park; in
24 1968, he returned to Loyola Academy as headmaster, but in 1971,
25 was asked to become director of alumni affairs, a position he
26 held until 1988, when he was named Senior Alumni and
27 Development Officer; in his role as director of alumni affairs,
28 he routinely traveled across the United States for various
29 alumni gatherings; his affable nature and generous spirit
30 served as an example of the Ignatian ideal to Loyola Academy
31 graduates around the country and encouraged them to remain
32 involved with the school; and

1     WHEREAS, Throughout his life, Fr. Humbert served 3 times on
2 the faculty for the Council for Advancement and Support of
3 Education-National Association of Independent Schools
4 (CASE-NAIS) national meetings and workshops, and twice on the
5 faculty of the National Catholic Education Association (NCEA);
6 and
 
7     WHEREAS, The passing of Fr. Robert Humbert, S.J., will be
8 deeply felt by many, especially by his sisters, Mary (Charles)
9 Maloney and Margaret (Thomas) O'Meara; therefore, be it
 
10     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL
11 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the death of
12 Fr. Robert Humbert, S.J., along with all who knew and loved him
13 and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and
14 religious community in the hierarchy of his faith; and be it
15 further
 
16     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
17 presented to the family of Fr. Robert Humbert, S.J., as an
18 expression of our deepest sympathy.
