HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of the
3 State of Illinois were deeply saddened to learn of the death of
4 Warren V. Hileman of Anna on January 30, 2005; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Warren Hileman, age 103, was the last remaining
6 World War I veteran residing in any of the State's veteran
7 homes, and he may have been the only one in the State; and
 
8     WHEREAS, It was wanderlust that led him to enlist in the
9 war when he was just 17, and he found himself sent to Siberia
10 as part of the American Expeditionary Force; he landed in
11 Vladivostok on September 6, 1919, a bit shy of his 18th
12 birthday, and his unit remained in Siberia until 1921, long
13 after the war had ended in November 1918; and
 
14     WHEREAS, From Siberia, his outfit was transferred to the
15 Philippine Islands after going through China and seeing the
16 Great Wall; he was briefly in Nagasaki, Japan, and later was
17 transferred to Scofield Barracks in Hawaii; he was discharged
18 from service in 1922 at Fort McDowell on San Francisco Bay; and
 
19     WHEREAS, After working upstate, he moved back to his native
20 Union County when he retired at age 70; he moved into the
21 Illinois Veterans Home in Anna in 1995; he continued to drive
22 to Jonesboro to visit his friends and family well into his 90s,
23 giving up driving at age 98; he was a life member of Carroll P.
24 Foster VFW Post 3455; and
 
25     WHEREAS, In January 2004, 84 years after the Great War
26 ended, he received the World War I Victory Medal; his unit,
27 Company B, 27th Infantry, was involved in a hostile encounter
28 in Posolskaya which entitled him to the medal; January 14, 2004
29 was declared Warren V. Hileman Day in Illinois; and

1     WHEREAS, He was preceded in death by his wife, Mae
2 Elizabeth, who died in 1989; and
 
3     WHEREAS, The passing of Warren V. Hileman is felt by all
4 who knew and loved him, especially his daughter and son-in-law,
5 Janet and Joseph Hardin; his two grandchildren, his
6 great-grandchildren; and other relatives; and
 
7     WHEREAS, His bravery and willingness to serve his country
8 will never be forgotten; it is because of true heroes like
9 Warren Hileman that each U.S. citizen has the freedoms they
10 enjoy; therefore, be it
 
11     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
12 NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
13 together with his family, friends, fellow members of the United
14 States armed forces, and the grateful citizens of this State
15 and this great nation, we mourn the passing of Warren V.
16 Hileman and we extend to his family our sincerest condolences;
17 and be it further
 
18     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
19 presented to his family as an expression of our deepest
20 sympathy.
