HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, Ovarian cancer is the seventh most common cancer
3 among women and the fifth leading cause of cancer death after
4 lung and bronchus, breast, colorectal, and pancreatic cancers;
5 ovarian cancer causes more deaths than any other cancer of the
6 female reproductive system; and
 
7     WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society estimates that
8 approximately 22,220 new cases of ovarian cancer will be
9 diagnosed in the United States in 2005 and an estimated 16,000
10 women died from ovarian cancer in the United States during
11 2004; and
 
12     WHEREAS, Ovarian cancer is the deadliest malignancy of the
13 female reproductive system, in part because only about 24
14 percent of the cases are detected during the early stages of
15 the disease; and
 
16     WHEREAS, An estimated 1,000 Illinois women die from ovarian
17 cancer annually; and
 
18     WHEREAS, The Pap test, which is an effective detector of
19 early cervical cancer, detects ovarian cancer only in the later
20 stages; and
 
21     WHEREAS, Screening with sonograms and blood tests of women
22 who are high risks for developing ovarian cancer, such as women
23 with family histories of ovarian cancer or breast cancer, would
24 help to save lives by early diagnosis and effective treatment;
25 and
 
26     WHEREAS, Other life-saving programs include public
27 education campaigns, programs to alert doctors regarding early
28 symptoms, insurance coverage for screening high risk
29 populations, and increased research; therefore, be it

1     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
2 NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
3 there is created a House Ovarian Cancer Study Committee to be
4 composed of six members of the House of Representatives, three
5 members to be appointed by the Speaker of the House of
6 Representatives and three members to be appointed by the
7 minority leader of the House of Representatives; the Speaker
8 shall designate a member of the committee as chairperson of the
9 committee; the chairperson shall call all meetings of the
10 committee; and be it further
 
11     RESOLVED, That the committee shall undertake a study of the
12 conditions, needs, issues, and problems related to ovarian
13 cancer and recommend any actions or legislation which the
14 committee deems necessary or appropriate; the committee shall
15 conduct such meetings at such places and at such times as it
16 may deem necessary or convenient to enable it to exercise fully
17 and effectively its powers, perform its duties, and accomplish
18 the objectives and purposes of this resolution; the committee
19 shall submit a report of its findings and recommendations, with
20 suggestions for proposed legislation, on or before December 31,
21 2007.
