HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The Illinois Chapters of Alpha Kappa Alpha
3 Sorority, Inc. are sponsoring their seventh annual legislative
4 visit to the State Capitol; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. was founded in
6 1908 as the first sorority established by African-American
7 college women; and
 
8     WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha is an international
9 organization with over 200,000 undergraduate and alumnae
10 members; and
 
11     WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha itself is an organization with a
12 commitment to promoting education, healthy minds and bodies,
13 family unity, economic development, political empowerment,
14 cultural heritage, and the arts; and
 
15     WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha members who have distinguished
16 themselves individually include Rosa Parks, Coretta Scott
17 King, Hazel O'Leary, Maya Angelou, Toni Morrison, Ella
18 Fitzgerald, Phylicia Rashad, Zina Garrison, Jane Addams,
19 Marlan Anderson, Margaret Burroughs, Cardiss Collins, Bettiann
20 Gardner, Marla Gibbs, Gladys Knight, Constance Baker Motley,
21 Jessye Norman, Anna Eleanor Roosevelt, Alicia Keys, and
22 Illinoisan Linda White, international president of Alpha Kappa
23 Alpha Sorority, Inc.; therefore, be it
 
24     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
25 NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
26 the members of this Body, in recognition of the achievements of
27 the members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and the values
28 for which they strive, do proclaim Wednesday, March 16, 2005,
29 as the Seventh Annual Alpha Kappa Alpha Day throughout the
30 State of Illinois; and be it further
