HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, Philip Miller Crane was born in Chicago on
3 November 3, 1930; he was educated at Hillsdale College, the
4 University of Vienna, and Indiana University (PhD 1961), and
5 served in the United States Army; and
 
6     WHEREAS, Congressman Phil Crane was a faculty member at
7 Indiana University and at Bradley University in Peoria, a staff
8 member for the Republican National Committee, director of
9 research for the 1964 Republican presidential candidate Barry
10 Goldwater, and a staff member of former Vice-President Richard
11 Nixon from 1964 to 1968, before entering the United States
12 House of Representatives; and
 
13     WHEREAS, Congressman Phil Crane was a Republican member of
14 the United States House of Representatives from 1969 to 2005,
15 representing the 8th District of Illinois in the northwestern
16 suburbs of Chicago; he was first elected to Congress in the
17 13th District of Illinois in a 1969 special election,
18 succeeding Representative Donald Rumsfeld, who was appointed
19 to a position in the Nixon Administration; he was elected to a
20 full term in 1970 and 16 times thereafter; his district number
21 changed as Illinois lost population; it went from the 13th
22 (1969-73) to the 12th (1973-93) to the 8th (1993-2005); he
23 almost always won with 70 percent or more of the vote until the
24 1990s, when Illinois began trending more Democratic; before
25 losing his re-election bid during the 2004 election, he was the
26 longest-serving Republican member of the U.S. House of
27 Representatives; and
 
28     WHEREAS, For 35 years, Congressman Phil Crane represented
29 the beliefs of his constituents, including family values, low
30 taxes, a strong military, limited government, and respect for
31 the unborn; therefore, be it

1     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
2 NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
3 former Congressman Philip Miller Crane shall be honored for his
4 exemplary career of service to the citizens of the State of
5 Illinois; and be it further
 
6     RESOLVED, Congressman Crane shall be remembered and
7 honored for his steadfast commitment to democracy and the
8 democratic process that has enabled him to faithfully represent
9 the State of Illinois, and allowed him the opportunity to
10 embody, for 35 years, the courage, knowledge, and honesty
11 needed in an Illinois elected official to represent our State
12 in the United States Congress; and be it further
 
13     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution is to be
14 presented to Congressman Philip Crane and his family.
