HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, On Monday, January 16, 2006, an historic event
3 took place in Monrovia, Liberia, as Ellen Johnson Sirleaf took
4 office as Liberia's leader, making her the first elected female
5 president on the African continent; and
 
6     WHEREAS, Born in Liberia in 1938, President Sirleaf worked
7 her way through college in the United States by mopping floors
8 and waiting tables; she graduated with a master's degree in
9 public administration from Harvard University in 1971; and
 
10     WHEREAS, She served in several top positions in Liberia,
11 including as finance minister; she also held senior positions
12 with Citibank, the World Bank, and the United Nations; and
 
13     WHEREAS, She was imprisoned twice in Liberia in the 1980s
14 for political reasons; and
 
15     WHEREAS, Founded by freed American slaves in 1847, Liberia
16 was prosperous and peaceful for more than a century, bolstered
17 by abundant timber and diamond wealth; more recently, the
18 country has dealt with back-to-back civil wars, and has much
19 rebuilding to do; therefore, be it
 
20     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
21 NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
22 we join with the Conference of Women Legislators and the
23 African-American Caucus in congratulating President Ellen
24 Johnson Sirleaf on her inauguration as the first elected female
25 president on the African continent, and we wish her the best in
26 her term of office; and be it further
 
27     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
28 presented to President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf as an expression
29 of our esteem.
