HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of the
3 State of Illinois are pleased to recognize the fiftieth
4 anniversary of the St. Joseph Club; and
 
5     WHEREAS, The San Guiseppe Society was officially chartered
6 with the State of Illinois on August 13, 1926; the group
7 originated in Chicago's Bridgeport neighborhood, when members
8 of the All Saints Parish, which was composed of predominantly
9 Sicilian/Italian families, chose to make their regular
10 Saturday evening gatherings a more formal group; and
 
11     WHEREAS, The group purchased its first property from the
12 Mellon family; the first building was located at 608 West 26th
13 Street and made the San Guiseppe Society one of the first
14 Italian-American clubs in the city of Chicago to own its own
15 property; and
 
16     WHEREAS, The membership has both gained and declined
17 throughout the years; the name of the club changed to the Saint
18 Joseph Athletic Association and came to its present name, the
19 Saint Joseph Club; and
 
20     WHEREAS, In 1989, the membership voted to sell the property
21 at 608 West 26th Street and to buy property at 2724 South Union
22 Avenue; this purchase of a new home for the club and the
23 subsequent renovation of the new property revitalized the
24 group; many new members joined and the group continued to grow;
25 and
 
26     WHEREAS, The Saint Joseph Club regularly contributes to
27 several groups and organizations, including the Saint Albert
28 the Great Knights of Columbus, the Palos Ladies Golf Club
29 Annual Breast Cancer golf outing, the All Saints - Saint
30 Anthony senior citizen Christmas Party, area churches, area

1 family that experience tragedies, the Veterans of Foreign Wars
2 Mark White Post, the McGuane Park Baseball League (team
3 sponsorship), the September 11th Memorial, and Fireman and
4 Police benefits; the group also provides educational
5 assistance awards, contributes to Thanksgiving food drives and
6 clothing drives, and provides support to troops overseas;
7 therefore, be it
 
8     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
9 NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
10 we recognize the fiftieth anniversary of the Saint Joseph Club;
11 and be it further
 
12     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
13 presented to the Saint Joseph Club as an expression of our
14 esteem.
