HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, Those individuals that choose a career which
3 places them in harm's way for the safety and protection of
4 others are worthy of our highest praise; and
 
5     WHEREAS, It has come to our attention that Manuel Felix
6 Acevedo is retiring from his position with the Chicago Police
7 Department; and
 
8     WHEREAS, Officer Acevedo started his Chicago Police career
9 on July 19, 1982, when he began working the streets in the 13th
10 Police District on the near north side; after only three years
11 as an officer he was promoted to Field Training Officer; and
 
12     WHEREAS, In September of 1986, he was transferred to the
13 Department's Gang Crimes West Section; the Gang Crimes Section
14 was staffed by some of Chicago's most aggressive street
15 officers; the unit was then Superintendent Leroy Martin's
16 "pride and joy"; and
 
17     WHEREAS, Officer Acevedo's duties took him to the near west
18 side of the city which included the 10th, 11th, 12th, and 13th
19 police districts; the 10th & 11th districts often led the city
20 in gang related killings; in January of 1993, the gang crimes
21 unit was drastically reduced because of budget revamping and
22 Officer Acevedo chose to continue working in the 10th district,
23 where he knew his gang crimes knowledge would be most
24 beneficial to the city; there he and other officers from gang
25 crimes west initiated what was to become the first district
26 gang tactical team; and
 
27     WHEREAS, Manny continued his career in the 10th District
28 until September of 2001, when the city beefed up its airport
29 protection unit in response to the attack of 9/11; in January
30 of 2003, Officer Acevedo requested a leave of absence from the

1 police department in order to further develop his law
2 enforcement career by joining the Illinois Department of
3 Corrections, where he continues his work with the Intelligence
4 Division of IDOC, striving to make the community a little safer
5 by keeping on top of the criminal gang factions that corrode
6 the safety net that protects the general public; and
 
7     WHEREAS, His retirement from the police department was
8 official on the day he celebrated his 50th birthday, Wednesday,
9 July 26, 2006; therefore, be it
 
10     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
11 NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
12 we congratulate Officer Manuel F. Acevedo on the occasion of
13 his retirement, and we thank him for devoting his life to the
14 protection of others; and be it further
 
15     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
16 presented to Officer Acevedo as an expression of our esteem.
