SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois
3 learned with sadness of the death of Reverend Robert E.
4 McLaughlin on Monday, January 24, 2005; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Robert McLaughlin grew up on Chicago's West Side,
6 the son John and Mary McLaughlin; the Chicago Cubs fan attended
7 St. Frances of Rome Catholic School in Cicero before continuing
8 his studies at Quigley Seminary North and St. Mary of the Lake
9 Seminary in Mundelein; he was ordained in 1966; and
 
10     WHEREAS, Reverend McLaughlin went on to receive a master's
11 degree in speech and communications at Northwestern University
12 in 1971; he later honed his leadership skills after receiving a
13 master's degree in organizational development at Loyola
14 University in 1987; and
 
15     WHEREAS, While serving as an associate pastor at Holy Name
16 Cathedral between 1966 and 1976, he taught religion and
17 communications to Quigley students; he later served as an
18 associate pastor at Mater Christi Parish in North Riverside and
19 as pastor of Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish in Chicago; he was
20 appointed rector-president of Niles College of Loyola
21 University in 1984; the late Cardinal Joseph Bernardin
22 appointed him as pastor of Holy Name Cathedral in 1990, where
23 he served until 2002; he had nearly 40 years of service in the
24 Archdiocese of Chicago; he was the Pastor of Mary, Seat of
25 Wisdom Parish in Park Ridge; and
 
26     WHEREAS, Reverend McLaughlin was known for his crimson
27 hair, "leprechaun" grin, and Irish tenor voice; he was an avid
28 golfer and had a magnetic personality; people loved him; he was
29 dubbed "little brother" because of his short stature and was
30 dedicated to spreading the church's message to the young and
31 old, and when he was at odds with his colleagues at the

1 Archdiocese of Chicago, he wasn't afraid to speak his mind; in
2 the 1970s, Father McLaughlin was president of the Association
3 of Chicago Priests, a group of several hundred clergy that
4 clashed with Cardinal John Cody over school closings and other
5 issues; and
 
6     WHEREAS, The passing of Reverend Robert E. McLaughlin has
7 been deeply felt by many, especially his brothers John P.
8 (Mariana) and Reverend Edward J.; his sister-in-law, Carol; his
9 14 nieces and nephews; and his many friends; he was preceded in
10 death by his parents, and his brother, Thomas; therefore, be it
 
11     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL
12 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
13 Reverend Robert E. McLaughlin, and we extend our deepest
14 sympathy to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved
15 him; and be it further
 
16     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
17 presented to his family as an expression of our sincerest
18 condolences.
