SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The National Campaign to Stop Red Light Running
3 has assembled a team of leaders from the fields of law
4 enforcement, transportation engineering, healthcare and
5 emergency medicine, and traffic safety to tackle this crucial
6 safety issue; and
 
7     WHEREAS, In 2002, as many as 207,000 crashes, 178,000,
8 injuries, and 921 fatalities in the United States were
9 attributed to red light running; and
 
10     WHEREAS, In many cities, the yellow light has come to
11 symbolize "hurry up" instead of "slow down"; therefore, be it
 
12     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL
13 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we urge the Illinois
14 Department of Transportation and local communities to program
15 their traffic signals at high-accident locations to add an
16 additional 2 seconds of red light time before the signal
17 changes to green, allowing intersections to clear before cross
18 traffic commences; and be it further
 
19     RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be delivered to
20 the Secretary of the Illinois Department of Transportation, the
21 Illinois Municipal League, and the Township Officials of
22 Illinois.
