SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, January is commemorated as "National Blood Donor
3 Month"; and
 
4     WHEREAS, Every three seconds in this country someone will
5 need blood; and
 
6     WHEREAS, A single trauma patient can use well over 100
7 units of blood; and
 
8     WHEREAS, A single blood donation can save up to three
9 lives; and
 
10     WHEREAS, Blood only has a shelf life of 42 days; and
 
11     WHEREAS, Blood is not only needed in times of disaster but
12 on a constant basis to treat everyday people; and
 
13     WHEREAS, Cancer patients are the biggest user group of
14 blood followed by use in treatment of neonatal, dialysis, burn
15 victims, and heart disease; and
 
16     WHEREAS, Blood is required in every organ transplant; and
 
17     WHEREAS, Less than 5% of the eligible population actually
18 donates blood; and
 
19     WHEREAS, Community blood centers rely 100% on donations
20 from volunteer donors in order to maintain a safe and viable
21 blood supply; and
 
22     WHEREAS, The State of Illinois recognizes the importance of
23 blood donation through the Blood Donation Act, the Employee
24 Blood Donation Leave Act, and the Organ Donor Leave Act;
25 therefore, be it

1     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL
2 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we name the month of
3 January as "Blood Donor Month"; and be it further
 
4     RESOLVED, That anyone who has never donated blood but is
5 eligible to is urged to step up to the challenge and become a
6 first time donor; and be it further
 
7     RESOLVED, That those who have donated blood are urged to
8 become regular donors; and be it further
 
9     RESOLVED, That all Illinoisans are urged to pay tribute to
10 those among us who donate for others in need; and be it further
 
11     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
12 presented to the Illinois Coalition of Community Blood Centers.
