SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
105 ILCS 5/2-3.142 new

    Amends the School Code. Subject to appropriation, requires the State Board of Education to establish and operate a renewable energy grant program to assist school districts in the installation, acquisition, construction, and improvement of renewable energy sources in the public schools. Provides that the grant shall cover 50% of the cost for which the grant is sought, up to a maximum grant of $1,000,000, if the applicant school district is able to demonstrate that it has funds to pay the other 50% of the cost. Effective July 1, 2007.

1     AN ACT concerning education.
 
2     Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3 represented in the General Assembly:
 
4     Section 5. The School Code is amended by adding Section
5 2-3.142 as follows:
 
6     (105 ILCS 5/2-3.142 new)
7     Sec. 2-3.142. Renewable energy grants.
8     (a) Subject to appropriation, the State Board of Education
9 shall establish and operate a renewable energy grant program to
10 assist school districts in the installation, acquisition,
11 construction, and improvement of renewable energy sources in
12 the public schools, including solar energy (such as solar
13 panels), geothermal energy, and wind energy.
14     (b) Application for a grant under this Section must be in
15 the form and manner established by rule of the State Board of
16 Education. The grant shall cover 50% of the cost for which the
17 grant is sought, up to a maximum grant of $1,000,000, if the
18 applicant school district is able to demonstrate that it has
19 funds to pay the other 50% of the cost. The school district may
20 accept private funds for its portion of the cost.
21     (c) The State Board of Education may adopt any rules that
22 are necessary to carry out its responsibilities under this
23 Section.
