SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
105 ILCS 5/27-24.6a new

    Amends the Driver Education Act of the School Code. Requires the Department of Transportation to establish a pilot program for driver education teachers in this State that uses an innovative, participatory, interactive driver education tool to help new drivers develop a positive, safe driving attitude. Under the pilot program, provides that a driver education teacher must attend a workshop in order to obtain the tool. Provides that the Department shall make 5 workshops available for driver education teachers. Requires the Department to evaluate the pilot program and report its findings and recommendations to the General Assembly concerning making the tool and workshops available to all driver education teachers in this State. Effective immediately.

1     AN ACT concerning education.
 
2     Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3 represented in the General Assembly:
 
4     Section 5. The School Code is amended by adding Section
5 27-24.6a as follows:
 
6     (105 ILCS 5/27-24.6a new)
7     Sec. 27-24.6a. Driver education teachers; pilot program.
8     (a) The Department of Transportation shall establish a
9 pilot program for driver education teachers in this State that
10 uses an innovative, participatory, interactive driver
11 education tool to help new drivers develop a positive, safe
12 driving attitude. Under the pilot program, a driver education
13 teacher must attend a workshop in order to obtain the tool. The
14 Department of Transportation shall make 5 workshops available
15 for driver education teachers.
16     (b) The Department of Transportation shall evaluate the
17 pilot program established under this Section by collecting
18 evaluations from teachers taking the workshop and performing a
19 qualitative analysis of the impact of the tool on select
20 students. The Department of Transportation shall report its
21 findings and recommendations to the General Assembly
22 concerning making the tool and workshops available to all
23 driver education teachers in this State by filing copies of the

1 report as provided in Section 3.1 of the General Assembly
2 Organization Act.
 
3     Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon
4 becoming law.
