HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The State of Illinois has a rich history of
3 political debate; and
 
4     WHEREAS, The Lincoln-Douglas debates set high standards
5 for political debate; and
 
6     WHEREAS, The Library and Museum present a unique forum for
7 events and lectures about Abraham Lincoln and political history
8 in general; and
 
9     WHEREAS, The Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum
10 in Simi Valley, California hosted a debate on May 3, 2007 that
11 featured the Republican candidates for President of the United
12 States; and
 
13     WHEREAS, The debate at the Reagan Library, which aired on
14 MSNBC and MSNBC.com, promoted the venue to the almost 1,800,000
15 viewers who watched the debate; and
 
16     WHEREAS, The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and
17 Museum, the City of Springfield and central Illinois would
18 benefit from similar media exposure generated by hosting a
19 debate between political candidates; and

1     WHEREAS, Current policies adopted by the Illinois Historic
2 Preservation Agency prohibit the Abraham Lincoln Presidential
3 Library and Museum from hosting political events; therefore, be
4 it
 
5     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
6 NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
7 urge the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency to amend its
8 policies regarding political events to allow debates between
9 candidates for political office; and be it further
 
10     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
11 delivered to the Chair of the Illinois Historic Preservation
12 Agency.
