HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, 2007 is the 35th anniversary of the Chicago
3 Botanic Garden; and
 
4     WHEREAS, The Chicago Botanic Garden is located at 1000 Lake
5 Cook Road in Glencoe, is owned by the Forest Preserve District
6 of Cook County, and is managed by the Chicago Horticultural
7 Society; and
 
8     WHEREAS, The Chicago Horticultural Society was founded in
9 1890; the Forest Preserve District of Cook County and the
10 Chicago Horticultural Society partnered in 1963;
11 groundbreaking ceremonies for the Chicago Botanic Garden took
12 place in 1965, and the Chicago Botanic Garden opened to the
13 public in 1972; and
 
14     WHEREAS, The 385-acre Chicago Botanic Garden has grown to
15 include 23 display gardens with almost 2.4 million plants and
16 three native habitats, uniquely situated on nine islands
17 surrounded by lakes; and
 
18     WHEREAS, The Chicago Botanic Garden has developed into a
19 preeminent center for learning and scientific research that
20 offers more than 500 courses, including graduate and
21 undergraduate level classes in plant sciences in collaboration

1 with some of the region's foremost universities; courses are
2 taught by leading scientists and teachers in the fields of
3 plant biology, conservation and horticulture; these learning
4 opportunities combined with the Garden's extensive outreach
5 programming, tell the important story of plants to children,
6 college students, educators, professionals, gardeners, land
7 managers, policymakers and the civic, corporate, and
8 philanthropic community; and
 
9     WHEREAS, The Chicago Botanic Garden welcomed 760,000
10 visitors in 2006, the second most-visited garden in the United
11 States, and membership reached 47,000, the largest membership
12 of any botanical garden in the nation; therefore, be it
 
13     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
14 NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
15 congratulate the many staff members and volunteers involved in
16 the operations of the Chicago Botanic Garden for celebrating 35
17 years of fulfilling its mission, in collections, beauty,
18 education, research, and conservation; the Garden, as a center
19 for teaching and research, dedicates its collections and
20 professional expertise to serving the needs of the world-wide
21 community and contributing to the understanding of the plant
22 world; and be it further
 
23     RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be

1 presented to William J. Hagenah, Chairman of the Board of
2 Directors of the Chicago Horticultural Society, and Barbara
3 Whitney Carr, President and CEO of the Chicago Botanic Garden.
