HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Lowell
4 Melvin Zollar of Chicago, who passed away on June 13, 2007; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Lowell Zollar was born on February 12, 1929 in
6 Kansas City, Missouri; his parents were Anderson and Carolyn
7 Zollar; and
 
8     WHEREAS, He attended Du Sable High School in Chicago where
9 he was head of the Rifle Club and was a lieutenant colonel in
10 the ROTC; he earned his Bachelor's degree from Roosevelt
11 University, his Master's degree in Public Health from the
12 University of Michigan, and his Doctorate of Medicine from
13 Howard University College of Medicine; and
 
14     WHEREAS, Lowell Zollar joined the United States Air Force
15 and later served as a recruiter in St. Louis; during this time
16 he met and married Doris Lowe, his wife of 52 years; and
 
17     WHEREAS, Lowell Zollar served as the first director of the
18 Virology Lab at the former Contagious Disease Hospital in
19 Chicago; he conducted research in virology at the Hektoen
20 Institute of Medical Research and later became a member of the
21 Board of Directors; he was Board Certified in Pediatrics; he

1 later served as Chief Resident of Cook County Hospital, where
2 he performed his internship and residency; and
 
3     WHEREAS, He was a clinical Associate Professor of
4 Pediatrics at the University of Illinois, Chairman of the
5 Department of Pediatrics at Mercy Hospital and later at Jackson
6 Park Hospital, and the founder of Children's Habilitation
7 Center in Harvey; and
 
8     WHEREAS, Lowell Zollar was a member of Kappa Alpha Psi; he
9 enjoyed traveling the world with his wife and friends; he
10 collected African and African-American art; and he loved
11 sunsets along the Inner Coastal Waterways of Hilton Head
12 Island; and
 
13     WHEREAS, Lowell Zollar is survived by his loving wife,
14 Doris; his two children, Nikki and Larry ("Lowell, Jr."); his
15 grandchildren, William Lowell Von Hoene ("Von") and Branden
16 Zollar; his son-in-law, William A. Von Hoene, Jr.; his sister,
17 Pearl Rawls; his niece, Carol Miller; his great nieces, Erin
18 and Alison Miller; and his many cousins, friends, supporters,
19 and colleagues; therefore, be it
 
20     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
21 NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
22 mourn, along with all who knew and loved him, the passing of

2     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
3 presented to the family of Lowell Melvin Zollar as a symbol of
4 our sympathy.
