HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Rudolph
4 Sherman Jackson of Chicago, who passed away on October 12,
5 2007; and
 
6     WHEREAS, Rudolph Jackson was born April 28, 1928 in Dayton,
7 Ohio, and moved to Chicago as a child; he received a diploma
8 for Electric Arc Welding from A & S Vocational Welding School
9 and achieved many accomplishments in the field of welding; he
10 worked for Pullman Standard Car, the Ford Motor Company, and
11 Electro Motives before going into business for himself; and
 
12     WHEREAS, Rudolph Jackson, at the urging of the late Mayor
13 of Chicago Harold Washington, took his welding talents and
14 opened Rudy's Construction; opening his enterprise in 1984
15 represented a second career for him, after working as a welder
16 for private companies for many years; while serving as a
17 volunteer in the campaign of Mayor Washington he was encouraged
18 by the late Mayor to open his business; the business thrived
19 and received contracts with the Chicago Public Schools and
20 other government agencies until the retirement of Mr. Jackson
21 in 2006; and
 
22     WHEREAS, Rudolph Jackson served in the United States Army

1 and was honorably discharged; he was awarded the American
2 Theater Ribbon and the World War II Victory Medal and was an
3 honor guard for President Truman; he was an active veteran and
4 a life member of AMVETS and Chaplain of the 247th AMVETS Post;
5 and
 
6     WHEREAS, A devotee of Dr. Martin Luther King and an
7 advocate for civil and human rights, Rudolph Jackson
8 participated in the 1963 March on Washington, supported Dr.
9 King's work in Chicago, made the pilgrimage to Washington to
10 participate in the Million Man March, and was active in a
11 variety of political campaigns; and
 
12     WHEREAS, The father of Real Men Cook founder, Yvette Moyo,
13 Jackson participated in Real Men Cook for Charity as a cook and
14 helper, and was its spiritual inspiration; Mr. Jackson was
15 saluted at last year's celebration as the ultimate "Real Man"
16 for being a spiritual guide to the group; and
 
17     WHEREAS, Mr. Jackson joined Trinity United Church of Christ
18 in 1987 and was a part of several ministries, including the
19 Men's Course and the Sanctuary Choir, and he was ordained as a
20 Deacon in 1993; he traveled to the continent of Africa on
21 several occasions, to Johannesburg, Capetown, and Durban,
22 South Africa as well as Ghana, Senegal, and the Ivory Coast in
23 West Africa, and Brazil and Haiti; at the request of Reverend

1 Dr. Jeremiah Wright, Mr. Jackson and Deacon Walter Jones
2 chaired the Men's Cell Group, a regular gathering of men that
3 includes readings, prayer,and spiritual leadership and support
4 for male members of the church, and he was actively involved
5 with the group until his passing; and
 
6     WHEREAS, Rudolph Jackson was preceded in death by his son,
7 Steven Dwayne Jackson; and
 
8     WHEREAS, Rudolph Jackson is survived by his wife, Pauline;
9 his daughters, Yvette Jackson Moyo, Sherry King, and Cynthia
10 Stringfellow; his brothers, Walter and Rudell; his sister, Eva
11 Mae, nine grandchildren, seven bonus grandchildren, three
12 great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins;
13 therefore, be it
 
14     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
15 NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
16 mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of
17 Rudolph Sherman Jackson; and be it further
 
18     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
19 presented to the family of Rudolph Sherman Jackson as a symbol
20 of our sympathy.
