HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are pleased to congratulate Monsignor Jerome
4 Hartlein on the 50th anniversary of his ordination; and
 
5     WHEREAS, He was born February 18, 1933 in East St. Louis
6 and attended St. Henry's Church and School; he later attended
7 Central Catholic High School for two years before entering St.
8 Henry's Seminary in Belleville; he finished his seminary
9 training at St. Meinrad Major Seminary in southern Indiana; and
 
10     WHEREAS, His ordination was on May 27, 1958 at St. Peter's
11 Cathedral in Belleville by Bishop Albert Zuroweste; his first
12 assignment was at St. Albert the Great Parish in Fairview
13 Heights; in 1963, he was assigned to full-time teaching at
14 Cathedral High School in Belleville and in residence at St.
15 Mary's Parish in Belleville; and
 
16     WHEREAS, On October 19, 1965 he was assigned to St. Mary's
17 Church at Mound City with St. Raphael's Mission in Mounds; it
18 was his first pastorate; in 1969, he was asked to take over the
19 parishes of St. Catherine's in Grand Chain, and its Mission,
20 Our Lady of Fatima in Ullin, as missions to St. Mary's; and
 
21     WHEREAS, On July 6, 1972 he was assigned to Holy Childhood

1 Parish in Mascoutah; his first year in Mascoutah saw him take
2 over leadership of the Mascoutah Ministerial Association;
3 under his leadership the Meals Program for Seniors, the
4 Meals-on-Wheels Program, the Ecumenical Thanksgiving Day
5 Service, and many other programs and events were started in the
6 community; and
 
7     WHEREAS, He took over the Red Cross Blood Program in 1976;
8 the program went from one drive to eight drives a year; in 1978
9 he was asked to serve on the advisory board of the Red Cross
10 for blood recruitment and served as chairperson from 1980 to
11 1988; he also served on the Board of Directors of the St. Louis
12 Chapter of the Red Cross for a three-year period; and his
13 community was recognized in 2003 to host the national "Save a
14 Life" tour, one of only three stops in the State of Illinois;
15 and
 
16     WHEREAS, He has chaired the Diocesan Building Commission
17 since 1978; he has also served on the Diocesan Priests' Senate,
18 the Clergyman's Aid Society, the Catholic Community
19 Foundation, and the Diocesan Board of Consultor's to the
20 Bishop; and
 
21     WHEREAS, Monsignor Hartlein enjoys woodworking,
22 woodcarving, leather carving, candle making, and many other
23 hobbies; therefore, be it

1     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
2 NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
3 congratulate Monsignor Jerome Hartlein on this momentous
4 anniversary and wish him the best in his future ministry
5 opportunities; and be it further
 
6     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
7 presented to Monsignor Jerome Hartlein as a symbol of our
8 respect.
