HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, Fibromyalgia is a disease with uncertain cause and
3 no known cure; this chronic condition affects an estimated
4 seven to ten million people in the United States and many more
5 millions of people worldwide; and
 
6     WHEREAS, Fibromyalgia is more likely to affect women,
7 occurring nine times out of ten in women; and
 
8     WHEREAS, Fibromyalgia is a very serious and chronic
9 illness, increasing at dramatic rates, causing those affected
10 to suffer from fatigue and debilitating pain in the muscles,
11 ligaments, and tendons; and
 
12     WHEREAS, People living with this condition learn to live
13 with difficulty in performing everyday activities, such as
14 climbing stairs, lifting weight, and performing other actions
15 involving physical strain, and with widespread pain in muscles,
16 joints, and ligaments; and
 
17     WHEREAS, People with fibromyalgia face discrimination in
18 the workplace and from family and friends because so few people
19 are aware or understand what fibromyalgia is and the symptoms
20 with which it manifests; and

1     WHEREAS, A diagnosis of fibromyalgia is difficult and takes
2 an average of five years because many of the symptoms mimic
3 those of other disorders, resulting in the average person
4 spending thousands of dollars in medical bills just to receive
5 a diagnosis; and
 
6     WHEREAS, Public education is important in order for
7 patients to receive proper diagnosis and treatment; public
8 awareness will help to eliminate the myths, improve patient
9 support, and encourage research; therefore, be it
 
10     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
11 NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
12 declare May 12, 2008 Fibromyalgia Awareness Day in the State of
13 Illinois and all citizens are encouraged to support those
14 seeking a cure for fibromyalgia and to assist those individuals
15 and families who on a daily basis deal with this devastating
16 disease.
