SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate wish to express
3 their sincere condolences to the family and friends of Estella
4 Parker of Chicago, who passed away on January 19, 2007; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Estella Parker was born on February 9, 1931 in
6 Chicago; her parents were Tullius and Annie Reba Parker; and
 
7     WHEREAS, Estella Parker attended Doolittle Elementary
8 School and graduated from Wendell Phillips High School in 1948;
9 she continued her studies at Herzel Junior College; and
 
10     WHEREAS, Estella Parker was raised in the West Point
11 Baptist Church family and applied her many Christian teachings
12 and business skills to various humanitarian services in the
13 church and community; and
 
14     WHEREAS, Working tirelessly in her church, Estella Parker
15 held such offices as the President of the General Missionary
16 Society, the National Officer of the National Baptist Congress,
17 the Secretary to the Dean of Christian Education, and the
18 President of the Senior Citizens Council; and
 
19     WHEREAS, Estella Parker was one of the first Black
20 usherettes at the Oriental Theater in Chicago; she was one of

1 the first Black long-distance operators at Illinois Bell, where
2 she rose to the position of supervisor, retiring after thirty
3 years of dedicated service; and
 
4     WHEREAS, After her retirement she devoted herself to family
5 and community activities, including volunteering at The Bret
6 Harte School; she became more active with her sorority, Eta Phi
7 Beta, and enjoyed her sorority sisters; she extended her love
8 to children she mentored, especially Angela Dixon, Carl R.
9 Smith, Lindsey Phillips, Carl R. Smith Jr.(CJ), and Christian;
10 and
 
11     WHEREAS, Estella Parker is survived by her beloved mother,
12 Annie Reba Parker; her siblings, Mabel Parker Smith, Tullius
13 Parker, and Zelma Parker Davis; her sorority sisters at the
14 Alpha Lambda Chapter; and her nieces, nephews, cousins, and
15 special friends; therefore, be it
 
16     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL
17 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
18 her family and friends, the passing of Estella Parker; and be
19 it further
 
20     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
21 presented to the family of Estella Parker as a symbol of our
22 sincere sympathy at this time of loss.
