SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3 learn of the death of Maggie Peterson, who passed away on
4 September 10, 2007; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Maggie Peterson was born on December 25, 1912 in
6 Sulphur Spring, Mississippi; her parents were the late Howard
7 and Daisy Melton; she was united in holy matrimony to Willie
8 Peterson; to this union, two children, Leon and Sammie
9 Peterson, were born; and
 
10     WHEREAS, At the age of 12, Maggie Peterson confessed her
11 hope in Christ and joined the Macedonia Baptist Church; her
12 family moved to Sledge, Mississippi many years later and joined
13 the St. Phillip Baptist Church; the family moved again, to
14 Tutwiler, Mississippi, and joined the Mount Zion Baptist
15 Church, where Ms. Peterson sang with the Doctor Watts Choir in
16 1928; later, she moved to Mount Bayou, Louisiana and joined the
17 Jerusalem Baptist Church, where she was a member of the choir
18 and Usher Board; and
 
19     WHEREAS, In 1930, Maggie Peterson moved to Shelby,
20 Mississippi and joined the Magnolia Baptist Church, where she
21 served on the mother's board and choir; in 1941, she moved to
22 Detroit, Michigan and joined the Greater Russell Street Baptist

1 Church, where she rendered whatever services the congregation
2 required of her; in 1960, she moved to Gary, Indiana and joined
3 New Friendship Baptist Church, under the pastorate of Reverend
4 Benjamin Holmes; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Maggie Peterson was an accomplished choir singer;
6 she sang with the choirs of Macedonia Baptist Church, St.
7 Phillip Baptist Church, Mount Zion Baptist Church's Doctor
8 Watts Choir, the Jerusalem Baptist Church, Magnolia Baptist
9 Church, Greater Russell Street Baptist Church, and the New
10 Friendship Baptist Church; and
 
11     WHEREAS, Maggie Peterson's love of life and ability to live
12 it to the fullest endeared her to her family members, friends,
13 and all who knew her, and enabled her to enrich their lives in
14 ways they will never forget; therefore, be it
 
15     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL
16 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
17 her family and friends, the passing of Maggie Peterson; and be
18 it further
 
19     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
20 presented to the family of Maggie Peterson as an expression of
21 our sympathy.
