     Amends the Hospital Licensing Act. Requires hospitals to provide, free of charge, information
and instructional materials regarding sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), explaining the medical effects upon infants and young children and emphasizing measures that may reduce the risk. Provides that such information and materials shall   be provided to parents or legal guardians of each newborn, upon
discharge from the hospital, and that prior to discharge, a nurse or appropriate staff person shall review the proffered materials with the infant's parents or legal guardian and shall discuss best practices to reduce the incidence of SIDS as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics.

    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,

represented in the General Assembly:

    Section 5. The Hospital Licensing Act is amended  by adding 
5
Section 11.6 as follows:

    (210 ILCS 85/11.6 new)

    Sec. 11.6. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) Education.

    (a) A hospital shall provide, free of charge, information

9
and instructional materials regarding sudden infant death 
10
syndrome (SIDS), explaining the medical effects upon infants 
11
and young children and emphasizing measures that may reduce the 
12
risk.

    (b)  The information and materials described in subsection 
14
(a)
shall be provided to parents or legal guardians of each 
15
newborn, upon
discharge from the hospital. Prior to discharge, 
16
a nurse or appropriate staff person shall review the proffered 
17
materials with the infant's parents or legal guardian and shall 
18
discuss best practices to reduce the incidence of SIDS as 
19
recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics. 
20
    (c) Nothing in this Section prohibits a hospital from

21
obtaining free and suitable information from a public or

22
private agency.
