1 HOUSE RESOLUTION

2 WHEREAS, Paula Allen-Meares, Ph.D. became Chancellor of

3 the University of Illinois at Chicago on January 16, 2009; and

4 WHEREAS, Dr. Allen-Meares is a distinguished,

5 nationally-recognized social work research scholar, educator,

6 and practitioner who most recently served as Dean and the Norma

7 Radin Collegiate Professor of the School of Social Work and

8 Professor of Education at the University of Michigan; and

9 WHEREAS, While serving as Dean, Dr. Allen-Meares published

10 25 journal articles, eight books, 10 chapters, and provided

11 unparalleled leadership via her personal commitment to

12 scholarly excellence; and

13 WHEREAS, The University of Michigan School of Social Work

14 was ranked number one among graduate schools of social work by

15 U.S. News and World Report for 13 of her 15-years as dean; and

16 WHEREAS, Dr. Allen-Meares also served as Dean and Professor

17 of the School of Social Work at the University of Illinois at

18 Urbana-Champaign, where she received her Master's degree in

19 Social Work and Ph.D. in social work; and

20 WHEREAS, Dr. Allen-Meares' elevation to the office of

1 chancellor validates the important leadership role that social

2 workers and the social work profession contribute to creating

3 and sustaining a more just society; and

4 WHEREAS, Dr. Allen-Meares joins the ranks of an elite group

5 of African American women to lead a major research university

6 in the United States; therefore, be it

7 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE

8 NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we

9 congratulate Dr. Paula Allen-Meares and wish her continued

10 success in her leadership duties at the University of Illinois

11 at Chicago; and be it further

12 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be

13 presented to Dr. Paula Allen-Meares as a symbol of our respect

14 and esteem.
