HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are pleased to honor John A. Barnhart for his
4 many years of dedicated service to his nation as a member of
5 the United States Army and congratulate him for attending the
6 last reunion of General George Patton's army; and
 
7     WHEREAS, John Barnhart was born on June 13, 1926; he
8 entered the United States Army in August in 1944 and was placed
9 in the 4th Armor Division, 10th Armor Infantry; he joined the
10 Army just after the Battle of the Bulge and broke through the
11 Siegfried Line with General Patton all the way to
12 Czechoslovakia; and
 
13     WHEREAS, As a member of General Patton's army, John
14 Barnhart was once ordered to lacquer a helmet for General
15 Patton, a task that required 15 coats of lacquer and the
16 application of the general's stars; he also had to put clean
17 seat covers on General Patton's Jeep; and
 
18     WHEREAS, John Barnhart was subsequently transferred to the
19 Army Air Corps (now the United States Air Force) in 1948; he
20 worked as a crew chief on C-47s, B-26s, and AT-6s; he then
21 became an electronics instructor and retired from the military
22 in 1969 at the rank of Master Sergeant; and

1     WHEREAS, John Barnhart is the youngest living member of
2 Patton's Army; he will attend the last reunion of Patton's Army
3 on September 10, 2009 in Washington, D.C.; therefore, be it
 
4     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
5 NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
6 honor John A. Barnhart for his many years of dedicated service
7 to his nation as a member of the United States Army,
8 congratulate him for attending the last reunion of General
9 George Patton's army, and wish him great happiness and good
10 health in the future; and be it further
 
11     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
12 presented to John Barnhart as a symbol of our esteem and
13 respect.
