HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are pleased to congratulate the members of the
4 Decatur Trades & Labor Assembly on the occasion of the 50th
5 anniversary of the organization's charter with the AFL-CIO; and
 
6     WHEREAS, Following the 1955 merger of the American
7 Federation of Labor and the Congress of Industrial
8 Organizations, the mergers of their central bodies had to be
9 completed at the local level; on February 10, 1959, the AFL and
10 CIO affiliates in Decatur merged to form the Decatur Trades &
11 Labor Assembly; and
 
12     WHEREAS, The newly-created Decatur Trades & Labor
13 Assembly, composed of several unions in the public and private
14 sectors, pledged early on to play a strong role in the
15 community; having pledged to come together as a central labor
16 council, the Assembly established a committee structure that
17 would support the council's activities; the Assembly chose
18 William Moore, a member of IBEW Local 51, to serve as the
19 group's first President; and
 
20     WHEREAS, The Decatur Trades & Labor Assembly has had a rich
21 history of tireless efforts to help workers organize unions,
22 win and enforce contracts, improve working conditions, and

1 create a sense of solidarity amongst workers; the Assembly has
2 also published newspapers, promoted union labels, participated
3 in political causes, educated the public on union issues, and
4 supported striking workers; and
 
5     WHEREAS, The Decatur Trades & Labor Assembly has also
6 promoted various charitable and civic causes, including blood
7 drives for the American Red Cross, food drives for local food
8 banks, "Get Out the Vote" efforts during elections, and various
9 humanitarian efforts with the United Way; the Assembly also
10 participates in various coalitions with faith-based groups and
11 the NAACP, among others; and
 
12     WHEREAS, The Decatur Trades & Labor Assembly currently
13 represents 35 affiliated unions and more than 14,000 union
14 members and their families in Macon County; and
 
15     WHEREAS, The efforts of the Decatur Trades & Labor Assembly
16 have been vital in the safeguarding of worker's rights in the
17 City of Decatur and its surrounding areas; therefore, be it
 
18     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
19 NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
20 congratulate the members of the Decatur Trades & Labor Assembly
21 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the organization's
22 charter with the AFL-CIO and wish them continued success and

1 happiness in the future; and be it further
 
2     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
3 presented to the members of the Decatur Trades & Labor Assembly
4 as a symbol of our esteem and respect.
