2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of
Patricia Hoglund-Michaels, who passed | ||||||
4 | away on October 28, 2010; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Patricia Hoglund-Michaels lived in Riverside | ||||||
6 | since childhood; she attended Central School, Riverside Junior | ||||||
7 | High School, and was a 1938 graduate of Riverside-Brookfield | ||||||
8 | High School, where she served as Student Council President | ||||||
9 | during her senior year; she subsequently attending the National | ||||||
10 | College of Education in Evanston, where she earned her degree | ||||||
11 | in education in 1942; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, Patricia Hoglund-Michaels taught second grade in | ||||||
13 | Oak Park for several years; in 1944, she married John Hoglund, | ||||||
14 | a 1938 graduate of Riverside-Brookfield High School whom she | ||||||
15 | had known since junior high school; together, they raised 3 | ||||||
16 | children in Riverside, Anne, Steven, and Mark; John Hoglund | ||||||
17 | passed away in 1983, 3 months before their 40th wedding | ||||||
18 | anniversary; in 1984, she married Earl Michaels ("Mike"), also | ||||||
19 | a 1938 graduate of Riverside-Brookfield High School; Mike | ||||||
20 | passed away in 1996; and
| ||||||
21 | WHEREAS, Patricia Hoglund-Michaels was prominent in local, | ||||||
22 | county, and statewide Republican Party activities during the |

1 | 1960s and 1970s; in the early 1960s, she was instrumental in | ||||||
2 | establishing Riverside's Republican Headquarters in order to | ||||||
3 | publicize and promote Republican candidates for offices at all | ||||||
4 | levels of government; from 1964 to 1974, she served as | ||||||
5 | Riverside Township's Republican Committeewoman, where she | ||||||
6 | worked with the Township Committeeman to organize local | ||||||
7 | Republican programs and activities and worked with fellow | ||||||
8 | Committeewomen from other communities in Cook County; in 1968, | ||||||
9 | she was appointed to serve as Vice Chairwoman of the Women's | ||||||
10 | Division of the Republican Central Committee; in 1972, she | ||||||
11 | became Chairwoman of the Women's Division; in 1974, she was | ||||||
12 | elected to be Riverside Township Republican Committeeman, | ||||||
13 | where she served until 1982; and | ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Patricia Hoglund-Michaels was a member of the | ||||||
15 | Riverside Garden Club for many years; she was active in | ||||||
16 | Riverside Infant Welfare, the Fortnightly Club, and the | ||||||
17 | Riverside Lions Club; from 1993 to 2005, she derived particular | ||||||
18 | pleasure from serving as a volunteer in the library at Blythe | ||||||
19 | Park School in Riverside, where she read stories to 1st, 2nd, | ||||||
20 | and 3rd grade children; and
| ||||||
21 | WHEREAS, Patricia Hoglund-Michaels was well known among | ||||||
22 | her peers for her considerable artistic talents; during the | ||||||
23 | 1960s, her medium was oil painting; in the 1970s, she | ||||||
24 | completely re-decorated the dollhouse that her daughter had |

1 | outgrown and created a number of shadow box displays for her | ||||||
2 | family and friends; she recently created drawings and paintings | ||||||
3 | with colored pencils and watercolors; she still attended weekly | ||||||
4 | oil painting classes in Riverside at the time of her passing; | ||||||
5 | and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Patricia Hoglund-Michaels is survived by her | ||||||
7 | children, Steven, Anne (Berardo) DeSimone, and Mark; her | ||||||
8 | grandsons, Jared Hoglund, Aaron Hoglund, and Todd (Anne Marie) | ||||||
9 | DeSimone; her nephew, Robert Price; and the many friends and | ||||||
10 | acquaintances she made during her years in Riverside; | ||||||
11 | therefore, be it
| ||||||
12 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL | ||||||
13 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with | ||||||
14 | her family and friends, the passing of Patricia | ||||||
15 | Hoglund-Michaels; and be it further
| ||||||
16 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
17 | presented to the family of Patricia Hoglund-Michaels as an | ||||||
18 | expression of our sympathy.
