Amends the Illinois Vehicle Code. Provides for the issuance of Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm license plates to residents who have earned the Southwest Asia Service Medal. Effective immediately.

| 1 | | AN ACT concerning transportation.
|
| 2 | | Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
|
| 3 | | represented in the General Assembly:
|
| 4 | | Section 5. The Illinois Vehicle Code is amended by adding |
| 5 | | Section 3-696 as follows:
|
| 6 | | (625 ILCS 5/3-696 new) |
| 7 | | Sec. 3-696. Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm license |
| 8 | | plates. |
| 9 | | (a) The Secretary, upon receipt of an
application made in |
| 10 | | the form prescribed by the Secretary of State, may
issue |
| 11 | | special registration plates designated as Operation Desert |
| 12 | | Shield/Desert Storm license plates to any Illinois resident who |
| 13 | | has earned the Southwest Asia Service Medal from the United |
| 14 | | States Armed Forces. The special plates issued pursuant to
this |
| 15 | | Section may be affixed only to passenger vehicles of the first
|
| 16 | | division, motorcycles, or motor vehicles of the second division |
| 17 | | weighing not more
than
8,000 pounds. Plates issued under this |
| 18 | | Section shall expire according to the staggered multi-year |
| 19 | | procedure established by Section 3-414.1 of this Code. |
| 20 | | (b) The design, color, and format of the plates shall be |
| 21 | | wholly within the discretion of the Secretary of State. |
| 22 | | Appropriate documentation, as
determined by the Secretary, and |
| 23 | | the appropriate registration
